Guided By Voices, Nirvana and Joy Division & Shows # 778, 779, 780, 781

In the month of June Revolution Rock celebrated the 25th anniversary of Guided By Voices Bee Thousand album, the 30th anniversary of Nirvana's Bleach and the 40th anniversary of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (1994)

Guided By Voices Bee Thousand was originally released on June 21st, 1994. At the time, GBV had already released several albums and Bee Thousand would be their seventh album. Prior to this, all of the band’s albums had been recorded in studios. Bee Thousand would be different. Instead of recording the album in a studio, GBV recorded this album on a variety of four track recorders in different garages and basements of the various band members. The results were very lo-fi, a lot of the recording sounds like it could be from an old bootleg. This was part of band leader Robert Pollard’s intention. He stated that he wanted the album to resemble Beatles bootlegs. Musically, the songs draw on British invasion rock, punk rock, pop, psychedelic and progressive rock influences. The majority of the music found on Bee Thousand was made up of overdubbed, re-edited versions of older, unused material by the band. Lyrically, the songs featured words that have drawn comparison to the cut-up technique that was once used by writer William Burroughs. The songs would draw on many themes that seemed fantastical, but due to the lyrical technique of Pollard, they are layered with many different potential meanings.

At this point in time Guided By Voices was more of loose collective of musicians. Pollard has stated that the band during this period was made up of whatever friends were available to play. In addition to the music created by Robert Pollard, there are also the songs written by Tobin Sprout, who would be part of the GBV classic lineup from 1987-1997 and again from 2010-2014. Songs such as “Awful Bliss”, “Mincer Ray”, Ester’s Day” and “Hot Freaks” all add to the uniqueness of this album and when combined with the other songs such as “I Am A Scientist”, “Hardcore UFO’s” and “Gold Star For Robot Boy” create something unpredictable and spontaneous. Originally Bee Thousand was going to be the last album for Guided By Voices, due to pressure to focus on Pollard’s teaching career and family, in addition to the financial issues that arose with being in a band. However, Bee Thousand pulled Guided By Voices out of obscurity and turned out to be a new beginning for the band.

Nirvana - Bleach (1989)

Originally released on June 15th, 1989 on Sub Pop Records, Bleach was the debut album by Nirvana. The album featured a heavier, grungier sound, as opposed to Nirvana’s Nevermind and In Utero albums. When Bleach was released it only featured eleven songs. It wasn’t until after Nirvana released Nevermind that Bleach would be re-released with two additional tracks. It would chart at number 89 on the Billboard 200 upon the re-release in 1992. The music on Bleach reflected the Seattle music scene at the time blending elements of punk, metal and classic rock.

Nirvana recorded Bleach with Jack Endino at Reciprocal Studios in sessions that took place between December 1988 and January 1989. Before Dave Grohl joined Nirvana as their drummer, the band went through a series of drummers. Prior to being called Nirvana, they went by several different band names and Aaron Burckhard played drums with them. He quit the band in December of 1987. In January 1988, Kurt Cobain asked Dale Crover (of The Melvins) to record a demo session with Nirvana so that it could help them find a new drummer. The band recorded ten songs on January 23rd, 1988, including vocal overdubs and had a rough mix of the songs done in roughly six hours. Dale Crover is featured on three songs on Bleach “Paper Cuts”, “Floyd The Barber” and “Downer” that originate from this session. Most of the others that he recorded during this session would be spread out over other releases such as 1992’s Incesticide and the 2004 box set With The Lights Out. Chad Channing joined Nirvana in 1988 and shortly after joining recorded the Love Buzz single with them. Other than the three noted songs, Channing is featured on the remainder of the songs on Bleach.

Lyrically, the songs on Bleach have a bleak and claustrophobic outlook. Cobain has said that most of the lyrics are about his life in Aberdeen. “Negative Creep” is one of the many tracks with heavy guitar riffs, “School” was said to be a critique of the Seattle music scene, and “Mr. Moustache” was inspired by Cobain’s dislike of macho behaviour. In addition to the heaviness found on Bleach, the song “About A Girl” shows the pop abilities of Kurt Cobain. This song has been described as a “Jangly R.E.M. type of pop song”, but also one influenced heavily by The Beatles. It stands out on Bleach, but also shows that Kurt Cobain and Nirvana were more than just another band in the Seattle music scene.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979)

On June 15th, 1979, Manchester band Joy Division released their debut album Unknown Pleasures on Factory Records. A high-water mark of postpunk music, this atmospheric release from the Manchester quartet made a significant impact in the realm of independent music. Before recording Unknown Pleasures, Joy Division was known as Warsaw. They signed a recording contract with RCA Records in 1977 and recorded demos for the label, however, they were unhappy with the results. The recordings were eventually released as Warsaw. Before that happened however, four of the songs from the RCA sessions were selected and self-released by Joy Division on their own Enigma label as An Ideal For Living. Heavily influenced by bands such as Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks, this EP reflected the band’s early punk sound. It was also around this time that Joy Division’s manager Rob Gretton convinced the band to sign to the label Factory Records. They signed to Factory Records in 1978 with Martin Hannett in the producer seat for their first album.

The recording of Unknown Pleasures took place at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, England over three weekends in April of 1979. Martin Hannett, who had produced the first Buzzcocks EP Spiral Scratch as Martin Zero took Joy Division’s punk sound and added his sense of experimentation to it. Hannett added space and atmosphere to Joy Division’s sound, which when combined with the music of Joy Division and the lyrics of Ian Curtis created a world of mystery and darker textures to the Unknown Pleasures landscape. Unusual production techniques were employed by Hannett such as using the sound of a toilet, breaking glass, someone eating crisps (played backwards), in addition to the use of tape echo, digital delay (on the drums) and time modulators. Ian Curtis’ vocals for the song “Insight” were also recorded from a telephone line.

The music while punk based was different. It would be known as post-punk. The basslines played by Peter Hook were played in higher registers, in a way that had not been done before. The baritone vocals by Curtis combined with minimalist guitar by Bernard Sumner and the manic, precise drumming of Stephen Morris created something unique. The lyrics of Curtis influenced by writers such as J.G. Ballard, William Burroughs, and Gogol, touched on many topics that weren’t being addressed at the time and that people still identify with today. Although the band were initially displeased with the sound of Unknown Pleasures, the album has had a long lasting legacy. Hundreds of musicians would claim influence from this album, ranging from rock acts like U2 and The Cure, to hip-hop artists like Danny Brown and Vince Staples. Its influence does not stop at music. It has also inspired books, film and even graphic design. Unknown Pleasures is an album that has been written about many times. There is something different for the listener to discover when listening to it. Whether it is the darker themes addressing depression, existentialism, the sense of alienation that people identify with or the other themes that run through this album, Unknown Pleasures creates an air of mystery that is not easily defined. It is one that keeps people returning to it and will do so for a long time to come.

CJAM FM Emergency Funding Drive & Show # 777

Due to a recent change from the Ontario government, CJAM FM’s funding is in jeopardy. We have already had to eliminate one of the three jobs at the station and 70% of our annual budget is at risk. The station is holding an emergency funding drive to help raise funds for CJAM FM at this time. CJAM and other Ontario campus stations serve as a source of alternative media to the mainstream. This is not just with music that we play, but with other spoken word programming that provides a look at different issues around the country that would not be heard otherwise. We are listened to at 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit and streamed/downloaded online by many listeners.

Bloodshot Bill Come Get Your Love Right Now & Shows # 774, 775, 776

Released in February 2019, Come Get Your Love Right Now is the latest album by Montreal musician Bloodshot Bill. Although he has had over 35 releases on a variety of labels such as Norton Records, this album marks the first from Bloodshot Bill to be released via Goner Records. Last year saw the release of This Is It! an album featuring Bloodshot Bill and The Hick-Ups. Also in 2019, Bloodshot Bill put out a seven inch entitled My Little Muck Muck with legendary Japanese trio The 5.6.7.8.’s, a new single Temple of Boom by The Tandoori Knights (with King Khan), and a surf EP called Hang Ten with Bloodshot Bill. Come Get Your Love Right Now follows the 2017 release Guitar Boy.

The album’s opening and title track, “Come Get Your Love Right Now” channels an early Sun Records aesthetic. With its acoustic guitar, reverb filled vocals, guitar slides this song sets the mood for the rest of the songs to come. “Take Me For A Ride” is a song that is part Trashmen vocals and propelling rockabilly rhythms. “Stumble” is an instrumental with a tense, brooding rhythm section as it builds and drives forth in a Link Wray styled fashion. This track is one of several other instrumental based tracks found between the other songs on Come Get Your Love Right Now. “Driftin” a blues-based instrumental, while “Drowning” is a high energy instrumental loaded with electric guitar and tremolo.

“Don’t Say Goodbye” is more of a ballad, while it still keeps Bloodshot Bill’s love of 50’s rock and roll’s past, it also drifts into a new territory with heartfelt emotion. “Only Girl” is a more upbeat song with its acoustic guitar, stand up bass fills and cymbal crashes, the catchy rockabilly riff of “Know Myself” hits the listener on another level. While not all of Bloodshot Bill’s vocals are clearly heard due to his use of reverb, this song, like many of Bloodshot Bill’s songs puts the listener into a certain state to feel the music rather than overthink it. “Hook Me’ shuffles with an old fashioned R&B groove, while “Do What You Do” jumps and moves with an unmistakable early rock n’ roll feeling. “Just Because” slows the pace down a bit as it blends early blues, country and rockabilly.

Come Get Your Love Right Now ends with three songs. “I Don’t Mind At All” is a song that showcases 50’s rock and roll with its staccato guitar stabs, and more guitar riffs inspired by a rebellious rock n roll spirit, “One At A Time”, a mid-tempo is a track that floats with surf inspired guitar riffs while “Honey Dolling” ends the album. With its early R&B rhythms and trademark Bloodshot Bill vocals, it ends the album after 35 minutes with sixteen songs, leaving the listener with a desire for more. With a multitude of releases under his belt, this album may be one of the strongest collections of material released by Bloodshot Bill. With Come Get Your Love Right Now, Bloodshot Bill strikes a chord with a certain immediacy as it mixes a selection of ballads and up-tempo rockabilly inspired tracks. Bloodshot Bill evokes a renegade spirit with a side of sophistication as he once again taps into a primitive rock and roll feeling.

King Khan's LTD - Stop Und Fick Dich! & Interview & Show # 771, 773

Stop Und Fick Dich! is the new album by the band Louder Than Death. LTD is fronted by King Khan. Known for his work in the garage rock duo The King Khan & BBQ Show and the soul oriented King Khan & The Shrines, King Khan orchestrates his vocals as a barrage of noise rises behind him in the form of early punk rock. The album attacks with a fuzzy primal instinct referencing bands such as Iggy & The Stooges, The Electric Eels, Destroy All Monsters, Suicide and many others. The band providing this aural landscape is made up of Looch Vibrato (guitar) and Aggy Sonora (drums) of the wild two-piece garage punk band Magnetix from Bordeaux, France and Fredovich who joins the band on bass from King Khan & The Shrines. Sean Spits is also featured as a second guitarist on several tracks.

“Chief Sleeps In The Park” unravels itself as the album’s first track with raw, unhinged fashion as the music takes hold of the listener with primitive guitar and bass in an Iggy & The Stooges style. Lyrically King Khan sings amongst the chaos with a chorus of “Holding our heads up so high/Watching the miserables pass me by” that provides an observational viewpoint on the state of the world. The title track, features a fuzzy garage journey into sexual politics, as “Erased World” switches course with a post punk edge. With lyrics such as “Tell me something stupid for a change,” “Civilizations out of style and only dust remains” and a chorus that states “Will I surrender to reanimate my soul,” King Khan sings with a dystopian slant that addresses modern times and a lack of meaning in the world that is both tongue-in-cheek and alarming.

Stop and Fick Dich! features new recordings of songs from King Khan’s back catalog. “Snot Queen”, “Scum of the Moon,” “Strange Way,” “Born In 77” and several others that were originally recorded by The Black Jaspers make up the majority of this album and are reborn here with LTD. “ABC’s In Old Berlin” also appears here with the new LTD backing section. This track first appeared on 2018’s self-titled Louder Than Death album that featured Sean & Erin of The Spits. “Long N Wavy” is sure to offend with provocative lyrics and music that borders between Keith Morris-era Black Flag and Motorhead. “No Brain No Pain” is a raunchy garage punk song that hits the listener in the gut as King Khan shouts “You still ain’t got no brain.” With a catchy chorus of “Ain’t no city gonna take away my brain/Ain’t no city gonna take away my pain” the character in the song refuses accept the trappings of normal city working life, loneliness and calls out for independence. “Spicy Chicken” features dual vocals featuring King Khan and Toni Lou that venture into the abstract. In between crunchy guitars the lyrics “Spicy chicken LSD/Spicy chicken baby you and me/Spicy chicken PCP/Let’s start a happy family” soar with a Ramones spirit.

“Baby Huey” ends Stop Und Fick Dich! With its post punk sounding bass and drums and intense, cutting guitar lines, King Khan delivers sermon-like lyrics overtop the music that drives the song for over five minutes, making it the longest LTD track. Ian Svenonius (The Make-Up/Chain and The Gang) joins King Khan on vocals adding more atmosphere to this track. Lyrically the song parallels themes of destruction, vengeance, revolution and ignorance. As the song moves forward it calls for change to rise during the troubled times being described. This ends the album on a visual, yet dystopian message that descends into chaos with a raw realism that casts itself on to the modern and past world. Stop Und Fick Dich! resurrects itself with music and messages that provide no clear answers, but at the same time drapes itself in a cloak of disguised social commentary that is likely to offend and delight in every way.

I.R.S. Records & Shows # 768, 769, 770

I.R.S. Records released music by some of the most influential and popular indie, alternative and new wave/punk artists in the 1980s. This American record label established a presence for many artists from the burgeoning UK punk and new wave music scenes through the US and Canada. They also released music by new US underground artists during this time period. The label had its beginnings in 1977 with a label called Illegal Records. At the time Miles Copeland III was managing The Police. This band also featured Stewart Copeland, Miles brother. The label was formed to release The Police’s first single “Fallout”. It was his connection with the Police and the success of their 1979 single “Roxanne” which helped to jumpstart I.R.S. Records. Copeland optioned this single to A&M Records who would help with distribution, while he would market, promote and arrange tour a tour for the band. The Police signed to A&M shortly after this. Along with the Frontier Booking International (F.B.I.) agency, run by Ian Copeland, the first tour of The Police was launched in the US. This highly publicized tour featured Ian driving the band around in the van while on tour, shared hotel rooms and no roadies. Several of the band’s early touring US adventures were covered in Sting’s 2003 memoir, Broken Music.

Later on in 1979, Copeland along with Jay Boberg and Carl Grasso formed the International Record Syndicate, also known as I.R.S. Records. With offices in Hollywood, New York and London, I.R.S. Records also had several subsidiary labels for different markets. The label specialized in music that was different from the mainstream and often took chances with the music on their roster. Miles Copeland stated in an article in the Los Angeles Times in 1988: "Most labels wouldn't touch this kind of artist. But what these artists have to say may be interesting, different and experimental. They deserve an outlet too. I give the acts all the artistic freedom they want as long as they come through for me--which means balancing their art with financial responsibility."

I.R.S. released influential college rock band R.E.M.’s first five full-length albums, not counting singles, compilation albums and their first EP, Chronic Town. Other music released by this label includes The Go-Go’s first three albums, albums by Oingo Boingo, The English Beat, Fine Young Cannibals, General Public, Concrete Blonde, Black Sabbath and The Alarm. Buzzcocks first US album, Singles Going Steady which compiled the band’s early singles and B-sides, was also put out by the label. I.R.S. Records also put out albums by The Cramps, The Bangles and many others. In addition to all of this from 1983 to 1987, they had a monthly program on MTV, which was still in its early stages at the time. Their program was called I.R.S. Records: The Cutting Edge. It featured artists from the labels roster and performances from bands coupled with interviews sometimes in clubs, recording studios or homes. Hosted primarily by Peter Zaremba of The Fleshtones (another artist associated with I.R.S. Records), the program would later evolve into the MTV program 120 Minutes. In 1985, I.R.S. Records changed its distribution outlet for arts from A&M Records to MCA and in 1990 to EMI until 1996. In 1996, I.R.S. Records released All Set by Buzzcocks. It would be their last release. The label has been revived a few times. Miles Copeland formed Ark 21 Records shortly after 1996. I.R.S. Records and all its affiliates took chances to release music that was different from the norm. They offered artists on its roster a package that included management, booking, recording and music publishing that may have otherwise not have had an outlet for their music at all.

Andre Williams & Dick Dale & Shows # 765, 766, 767

Andre Williams:

Andre Williams career has spanned many decades. His role in music was also influential, but in a different way. Williams began working at Fortune Records in Detroit in the late 1950’s. There he would record and write over 200 songs for the label. It was here that the young Andre Williams would establish his own, gritty and often seen as risqué lyrical prowess. In 1957, Williams released “Bacon Fat”, which sold so many records Fortune Records signed a deal with Epic Records to help it achieve wider distribution. Some of his other popular early songs included “Jail Bait”, “The Greasy Chicken” “Pass The Biscuits Please” and “Goin’ Down to Tijuana”. In 1968, Andre Williams signed with Chess Records, releasing hit singles “Cadillac Jack” and “Humpin’, Bumpin’ and Thumpin’”. Williams recorded and collaborated with many musicians in his R&B circle such as Stevie Wonder (co-writing his first song “Thank You For Loving Me”) and he co-wrote the song “Shake A Tail Feather”. He has recorded and worked with so many artists it is often difficult to keep track. In the 1970s, Williams wrote songs for Parliament and Funkadelic as well as producing Ike Turner.

In the 1980s, Andre Williams became homeless due to issues with drugs and alcohol. During this time he lived in Chicago, Illinois. His career would have a resurgence when he began working with Bloodshot Records in the 90s. In 1996, he released the album Mr. Rhythm, which featured new renditions of early Fortune Records classics. In 1998, he worked with Mick Collins and Danny Kroha of the Gories to produce the album, Silky. The album ventured into R&B, early rock and roll and garage rock. Despite Williams being 65 at the time, the album showed that he could still produce a wildly vulgar and energetic garage rock album for a new generation and audience that also drew on his R&B roots. Williams recorded and released two albums with The Sadies as his backing band (1999’s Red Dirt and 2012’s Night & Day). Williams continued to perform and record music up until his passing in March of 2019. In 2016, Andre Williams released the album I Wanna Go Back To Detroit City. The album, which would turn out to be his last, featured collaborations with Dennis Coffey, Danny Kroha and Mathew Smith.

Dick Dale:

Dick Dale was a pioneering guitarist who had an influence that spanned decades. Beginning in the late 50’s Dale helped to pioneer what would eventually be known as surf music. At the age of 17, Dick Dale learned to surf and combined his love of surfing with music to create something unique at the time. He experimented with sound, reverb and volume to create a sound that was similar to the sound of crashing waves. Dale’s 1961 single “Let’s Go Trippin’” is often viewed as one of the first songs to be released. Although he has often stated that he had no technical training, Dale’s music often drew on Middle Eastern music scales. He worked closely with Leo Fender to help create the first 100-watt amplifier. Since Dale played so loud he would often blow up amplifiers on stage. The amp that was created would be known as the Fender Showman. He also helped to popularize the Fender Stratocaster guitar. A gold one was given to him by Leo Fender himself and nicknamed “The Beast”.

In addition to this his influence reached different audiences influencing all sorts of music and genres. Artists such as The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Surfaris, and The Ventures to name a few. Dale himself was nicknamed “The King of Surf Guitar”. Dick Dale & His Del-Tones appear in the 1963 Beach Party movie and the 1964 movie Muscle Beach Party that occurred around the height of the 60’s surf craze. He would later have resurgence when his signature song “Misirlou” was featured in the opening credits to the 1994 Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction. Around this time Dale began to tour again, which he would continue to do until his passing, often to help pay for his medical bills. Dick Dale would still record and release music. Not counting compilation and live albums, Dale released out four studio albums from 1993-2001 (Tribal Thunder (1993), Unknown Territory (1994), Calling Up Spirits (1996), and Spacial Disorientation (2001)). Dale continued to tour until his passing at the age of 81 in March 2018.

An Interview with Shana Cleveland & Show # 764

With a title inspired in part by Sun Ra’s Night of the Purple Moon, Shana Cleveland releases her second solo album, Night of the Worm Moon in April 2019 on Hardly Art Records. Her first solo album was released in 2015 and entitled, Oh Man, Cover the Ground. It was credited to Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles. Night of the Worm Moon was recorded in 2017 shortly after the recording of La Luz’s Floating Features (her other band). Like Oh Man, Cover the Ground, the album draws more on folk textures musically. Just from hearing the first two songs released from this album (“Don’t Let Me Sleep”, “Face of the Sun”), listeners can hear the songs take on a cosmic folk atmosphere, blending folky acoustic rhythms that move mysteriously mixed with more psychedelic elements.

“Don’t Let Me Sleep” starts off with a lone acoustic guitar resembling a Leonard Cohen influence before the vocals and other instrumentation cascade into the song’s landscape. With jazz sounding bass, keyboards and layered vocals, the song displays an internal paranoia lyrically. The music video adds further textures and layers to the possible meanings behind this song as an otherworldly alien explores a planet, searching for answers to what they are seeing. “Face of the Sun” features prominent acoustic guitar as electric guitar lines that blur the line between psychedelic and surf rock surface throughout various points in the song. Lyrically, the song shows a character that is trying to break free from their past, while still being blinded by the light from their past glories. Night of the Worm Moon creeps and crawls with cosmic and otherworldly themes, while at the same time still being grounded within the internal and introspective elements of daily life.

Revolution Surf : Horror Themed Edition & Show # 763

To commemorate this year’s annual surf rock episode of Revolution Rock, the program was made up entirely of horror themed tracks. Horror themed surf songs have been something that has been present in surf music for quite some time. Many horror-based themes have surfaced in surf/instrumental rock songs going back to the beginnings of surf music. Most likely due to the influx of the many monster movies of the time period, this type of surf music has been combined with film and TV on countless occasions adding a different mood and dimension to whatever it is associated with. Horror themed surf music is often creepy and spooky sounding, although some of it has often been seen as kitschy or cheesy. This type of surf music has operated parallel to the sunnier themed surf songs that have been created in the genre. The program featured tracks from The Ghastly Ones, Russia’s Messer Chups, The Primitive Finks, The Ventures, Link Wray and more.

The King Khan & BBQ Show Radio Special & Show # 762

The King Khan & BBQ Show are a Canadian garage duo from Montreal. The band is comprised of King Khan and BBQ, which is an alias for Mark Sultan. The duo formed in 2002 after a series of bands that both Khan and Sultan were playing with disbanded. Prior to this, Sultan and Khan collaborated in a band called The Spaceshits, who disbanded in 1999. When King Khan, then going by the name Blacksnake, decided to live in Berlin, that group ended. He would go on to form King Khan & The Shrines following this. Around this time Mark Sultan formed the garage rock band Les Sexareenos. In 2002, Sultan began performing and recording as a one-man band under the name BBQ. It was not too long after this that Khan and Sultan began collaborating and recording together. With Mark Sultan (aka BBQ) on drums (bass and snare drum), guitar, vocals and King Khan on vocals and lead guitar, the band mixed elements of punk rock and doo wop, combined with their garage rock mentality to create a sound all their own.

The first self-titled King Khan & BBQ Show album was released in 2005 on Goner Records in the US and on Hazelwood Records in Europe. The King Khan & BBQ Show was recorded in Hamburg, Germany by DM Bob. The album captured the band tapping into a sweaty, wild, rock and roll atmosphere. In the same spirit of early rock and roll, The King Khan & BBQ Show featured songs such as “Waddlin’ Around” which chugs along with a 60’s garage rhythm, doo wop, and heart wrenching vocals provided by Mark Sultan and “Fish Fight,” a R&B rave up complete with Chuck Berry rhythms and driving punk dynamics. This song, like many on the album show that even though there isn’t bass on the album, the songs have a lot of soul. “Hold Me Tight” taps into a Cramps-like groove, complete with the words “Hold Me Tight” that come in near the choruses which sound like they are from Bobby Pickett’s 1962 Halloween classic “Monster Mash,” “Am I The One” features Sultan on vocals and a lone electric guitar and echoes 50s rock ballads, while “Mind, Body & Soul” claws and floats with an undeniable groove that sucks the listener into the King Khan & BBQ Show universe.

Following the release of the band’s first album, they embarked on a world tour playing in the US, Europe and South America. The band gained a reputation for their wild, energetic and controversial live shows. In 2006, they released What’s For Dinner? For this album, King Khan & BBQ Show sunk deeper into their own universe blending their early rock and roll, garage, soul and doo wop influences adding more of a mix of punk influences. “Treat Me Like A Dog” features a faster garage stomping rhythm as Mark Sultan howls over top, “I’ll Never Belong” is a bittersweet love song with lyrics such as “And after all/I'm on my way again/Come back who knows when/But you never let me go/But I will never belong to you” that is sung with soul as musically 50s rock and roll meets 60s garage. “Zombies” is snarled out by King Khan as Sultan holds a loose groove in the background. Lyrically with words like “I don’t wanna be alone tonight/I’m gonna walk with the zombies baby,” the song exudes a 70s punk influence as the character in it would rather wander into a world of horrors than to be confined to the boringness of the relationship reflected in this song. “Dock It # 8” ramps up a Chuck Berry influence as it attacks superficial rock and roll clichés lyrically, “Too Much In Love” drifts into doo wop territory with its infectious groove, “Learn My Language” is a 15 second punk rock attack that draws on a Black Flag influence, while “Blow My Top” brings hypnotizing grooves, and "What’s For Dinner?” is a catchy song with revved up garage riffs and lyrics that delve into family life paranoias.

Invisible Girl followed in 2009. This album was recorded at Moon Studios in Berlin and The Bomb Shelter in Brooklyn, New York. The production qualities seem to be less lo-fi than previous releases from the band, however, there is an undeniable raunchiness and humour that runs throughout. The album features songs such as the innuendo filled opening track “Anala,” the punk infused “Animal Party,” the sure to offend soulful punk of “Tastebuds” and the soulful, 50s/60s rock blend of “I’ll Be Loving You.” The album’s title track could be one of the catchiest songs ever written by the band with its psychedelic guitar tremolo effects and irresistible choruses. The hooks and melodies found here are extremely strong, but also the sleaziness factor is also high. On Invisible Girl the band found a balance between their wild outlandishness that at times offends and their ability to write strong song hooks. During the tour for Invisible Girl, Leo Chip (of the band Deadly Snakes), joined The King Khan & BBQ Show for some live dates as a drummer/organist. However, in 2010 the band split.

In 2015, The King Khan & BBQ Show returned with the album Bad News Boys. Recorded and produced in Sultan’s Berlin studio, Bad News Boys begins with the doo wop, garage stomp of “Alone Again”, a song drenched in 50s rock ‘n’ roll influences. Sung by this duo’s drummer, rhythm guitarist and main vocalist Mark Sultan, the song strikes a powerful, yet melodic chord that not only introduces us to King Khan & BBQ Show’s first album in a while, but it is also seeped in 50’s rock ballad drama. “Alone Again” evokes a togetherness in contrast to the songs surface message. The King Khan & BBQ Show are alone and together again creating their own brand of musical mayhem. “Illuminations” sung by King Khan shines with a 70s punk groove, while he sings of being a spark in the dark within a world of bright distractions as the chorus tells us “Illuminations/Don’t let them leave you behind,” “Ocean Of Love” brings back the band’s soulful influence, mixed with their brand of doo wop and in this case, sand dusted, glassy rhythms. “Snacking After Midnight” brings rusty rhythms and B-horror movie lyrics, along with the murky “Killing The Wolfman.” “Never Felt Like This” is a nostalgic love song, as with ‘’Buy Bye Bhai,” which brings forth strong, haunting soulful melodies.

The King Khan & BBQ Show have continued to tour off and on since 2011/2012. Throughout this band, after their initial split and even currently, King Khan and Mark Sultan have continually collaborated and recorded with other musicians and recorded music on their own. Most recently Mark Sultan has released a full-length album called Let Me Out and King Khan released his solo album Murderburgers in 2017. The music that they create whether it is together, with other groups or on their own taps into a musical world that can be soulful, or raw and dirty rock and roll. As stated in a press release for Bad News Boys “Their mission is to revere rock’n’roll – the real stuff – enough, so that they are permitted to invoke its spirits and ghosts using magick, using their raw soul - for good or for bad - to evoke the smells and feelings that confuse and delight.”

Love Bites: The Music of Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks & Show # 761

Pete Shelley formed the early punk band Buzzcocks in the UK with Howard Devoto in 1976 after seeing a Sex Pistols gig in Manchester in 1975. Along with Steve Diggle and John Maher, Buzzcocks recorded and released their Spiral Scratch EP in 1977 on their independent label, New Hormones. It was one of the first independent releases during the UK punk era of the late 70s, put out without the help of major record labels. Adhering to the DIY punk ethos, the success of this release inspired other bands and DIY labels to put out music on their own. Shortly after this release, Howard Devoto left the group, with Shelley taking the lead vocal/lead guitar role in the group. Steve Diggle switched to rhythm guitar from bass and bassist Steve Garvey would eventually join the group that when combined with drummer John Maher, formed the classic Buzzcocks band lineup.

Signing to United Artists, during Buzzcocks initial run with the classic band lineup they released three full-length albums, Another Music In A Different Kitchen (1978), Love Bites (1978) and A Different Kind of Tension in 1979. They also put out numerous singles and B-sides during this time period, most of which were collected for the 1979 compilation album Singles Going Steady. Originally released via I.R.S. Records in 1979, this compilation was put together to coincide with a tour that the band were doing of the US. It was also the first Buzzcocks album to be released in North America and also served as an introduction of the band to US audiences. Due to the strength of the songs in this collection, many people often cite this as one of the band’s best albums despite the fact that it is a compilation album made up of singles and their corresponding B-sides. At the time of this album’s release, Buzzcocks were on the verge of collapse and in 1981 the band split.

In addition to playing in Buzzcocks, Shelley’s also had a solo career, beginning with 1980’s Sky Yen. This album ventured into electronic and drone music. 1981’s Homosapien explored electronic pop and synthesizer based music in its early pioneering days. The music created during this period yielded three solo albums all within a similar synth rock vein. The first two albums Shelley recorded were produced by Martin Rushent. Homosapien (1981) and XL1 (1983) both explored what was new musical technology at the time such as synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines. The sound created on these albums were in part experiments with new sounds, but at the same time they still showcased Shelley’s ability to write catchy pop songs. “Homosapien” and “Telephone Operator” are good examples of Shelley's songwriting in the 80s when armed with different musical landscapes and technologies. The sounds he created were later explored to greater success with The Human League, whose album Dare was also produced by Rushent. In 1986, Shelley released Heaven & The Sea. Produced by Stephen Hague, the album added more texture and layers to the sound that Shelley developed on Homosapien and XL1.

Buzzcocks reformed in 1989 and an album followed in 1991 entitled Trade Test Transmissions. The lineup of the band would shift at this time and during different time periods in the later parts of Buzzcocks career, but the band toured from 1989 pretty much until Shelley’s passing in December 2018. Many albums were recorded and released in between this period including All Set (1996), Modern (1999), Buzzcocks (2003), Flat-Pack Philosophy (2006) and The Way in 2014. Buzzcocks mastered the art of the short pop song. The song “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) from Buzzcocks 1978 album Love Bites, was inspired by a line from the movie Guys and Dolls and has been called a pop masterpiece by many. The music he created with Buzzcocks often combined elements of punk, pop and power pop, to create catchy, memorable songs, often dealing with love gone wrong. Lyrically, his songs were often witty and open to interpretation and challenged the conventions of song writing. The songs that he created often spoke to people in a certain way, people of all types and will continue to do so.

Revolution Funk: The Music of James Brown & Show # 760

James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” was originally recorded at a jam session in 1969. The song was released as a two-part single via King Records in 1970 and eventually released on the compilation album In The Jungle Groove in 1986. The song however, is one of the most sampled songs in hip hop and popular music. The break in the song around the five minute twenty second mark features a drum break played by Clyde Stubblefield that has been sampled over one thousand times and is weaved among so many songs its often hard to keep track. This is just one of the songs that has been sampled by music created by James Brown. It is also an example of the vast influence he has had on music. James Brown, often known as “The Godfather of Soul” helped to secularize gospel music and in turn had a role in the creation of soul music. He would combine these elements of soul and R&B music to lay the foundations and to help create funk music. With his emphasis on the first note of every measure (known as “the one”), Brown and his band developed the downbeat, which created a groove that would become his signature.

In 1962, James Brown recorded his first live album. James Brown's record company was initially opposed to releasing a live album because it already contained versions of songs that had been previously released. However, when the album was finally released in 1963, it became a fast seller. Funded by James Brown himself, the album spent 66 weeks on the Billboard Top Pop Albums charts peaking at the #2 position. The recording showed James Brown with The Famous Flames channelling their energies into eight songs that lasted about 30 sweaty, soulful minutes. The record became so popular that many record stores in the US had trouble keeping it in stock for the public demand. R&B DJ’s would often also play the entire record on air, pausing only to air commercials and flip the record over to its second side. Live At The Apollo launched James Brown onto a new path towards success. It was followed by several other volumes, including Live At The Apollo Volume II in 1968, Revolution of the Mind: Live At The Apollo Volume III in 1970 and Live At The Apollo 1995.

In addition to this this, Brown addressed many social and political issues through his music with songs such as “Don’t Be A Dropout”, “Say It Loud (I’m Black and I’m Proud)”, “Funky President (People It’s Bad)”, and “Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Nothing” to name a few. By the early 70’s James Brown and his band, The J.B.’s established a funk sound that can be heard on songs such as “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine”, “Soul Power”, “Hot Pants”, “Make It Funky”, and “The Payback”. James Brown became a major figure in music in the 20th century that earned him many nicknames such as "Soul Brother Number One”, “The Hardest Working Man In Show Business” and “Mr. Dynamite” and also provided captivating live shows that often involved his unique dance moves. With dance moves such as the mashed potato, the funky chicken, the robot and his tour de force move, the split, Brown had a combination of factors that made him influential in numerous ways, but all of this earned him the nickname “The Godfather of Soul”.

Coming Up On Revolution Rock in 2019!

February is theme month once again for Revolution Rock. I will be doing a different themed program for each of the four weeks in February 2019. This year’s programming will begin with a program devoted to the music of James Brown. Each program will air on a Saturday from 7-9 PM and can be streamed/listened to online via www.cjam.ca or on the FM dial at 99.1 FM in the Windsor/Detroit area.

Revolution Funk: The Music of James Brown

James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” was originally recorded at a jam session in 1969. The song was released as a two-part single via King Records in 1970 and eventually released on the compilation album In The Jungle Groove in 1986. The song however, is one of the most sampled songs in hip hop and popular music. The break in the song around the five minute twenty second mark features a drum break played by Clyde Stubblefield has been sampled over one thousand times and is weaved among so many songs its often hard to keep track. This is just one of the songs that has been sampled by music created by James Brown. It is also an example of the vast influence he has had on music. James Brown, often known as “The Godfather of Soul” helped to secularize gospel music and in turn had a role in the creation of soul music. He would combine these elements of soul and R&B music to lay the foundations and to help create funk music. With his emphasis on the first note of every measure (known as “the one”), Brown and his band developed the downbeat, which created a groove that would become his signature.

In addition to this this, Brown addressed many social and political issues through his music with songs such as “Don’t Be A Dropout”, “Say It Loud (I’m Black and I’m Proud)”, “Funky President (People It’s Bad)”, and “Talkin’ Loud and Sayin’ Nothing” to name a few. By the early 70’s James Brown and his band, The J.B.’s established a funk sound that can be heard on songs such as “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine”, “Soul Power”, “Hot Pants”, “Make It Funky”, and “The Payback”. James Brown became a major figure in music in the 20th century and also provided captivating live shows that often involved his unique dance moves. With dance moves such as the mashed potato, the funky chicken, the robot and his tour de force move, the split, Brown had a combination of factors that made him influential in numerous ways. All of this earned him the nick name “The Godfather of Soul”. Revolution Rock celebrates Black History Month by playing music from James Brown’s catalogue, along with deep cuts, live recordings and a variety of other selections. Also joining the program will be guest host Graeme Sylvio of CJAM’s Sylvio & Soul radio program.

Love Bites: The Music of Pete Shelley

Pete Shelley formed the early punk band Buzzcocks in the UK with Howard Devoto in 1976 after seeing a Sex Pistols gig in Manchester in 1975. Along with Steve Diggle and John Maher, Buzzcocks recorded and released their Spiral Scratch EP in 1977 on their independent label, New Hormones. It was one of the first independent releases during the UK punk era of the late 70s, put out without the help of major record labels. Adhering to the DIY punk ethos, the success of this release inspired other bands to DIY labels to put out music on their own. Shortly after this release, Howard Devoto left the group, with Shelley taking the lead vocal/lead guitar role in the group. Steve Diggle switched to rhythm guitar from bass and bassist Steve Garvey would eventually join the group that when combined with drummer John Maher, formed the classic Buzzcocks band lineup.

Signing to United Artists, Buzzcocks mastered the art of the short pop song. The song “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve), was inspired by a line from the movie Guys and Dolls and has been called a pop masterpiece by many. The music he created often combined elements of punk, pop and power pop, to create catchy, memorable songs, often dealing with love gone wrong. Lyrically, his songs were often witty and open to interpretation and challenged the conventions of song writing. In addition to playing in Buzzcocks, Shelley’s also had a solo career, beginning with 1980’s Sky Yen. This album ventured into electronic and drone music. 1981’s Homosapien explored electronic pop and synthesizer based music, in its early pioneering days. For this episode, Revolution Rock will devote an entire program to music that has been created by Pete Shelley, featuring music from Buzzcocks, his solo career and other projects that he has been a part of.

The King Khan & BBQ Show Radio Special

The King Khan & BBQ Show are a Canadian garage duo from Montreal. The band is comprised of King Khan and BBQ (which is an alias for Mark Sultan). The duo formed in 2002 after a series of bands that both Khan and Sultan were playing with disbanded. Prior to this, Sultan and Khan collaborated in an earlier band called The Spaceshits, who disbanded in 1999. When King Khan, then going by the name Blacksnake, decided to live in Berlin, that group ended. He would go on to form King Khan & The Shrines following this. Around this time Mark Sultan formed the garage rock band Les Sexereenos. In 2002, Sultan began performing and recording as a one-man band under the name BBQ. It was not too long after this that Khan and Sultan began collaborating and recording together. The first self-titled King Khan & BBQ Show was released in 2005 on Goner Records in the US and on Hazelwood Records in Europe.

With Mark Sultan (aka BBQ) on drums (bass and snare drum), guitar, vocals and King Khan on vocals and lead guitar, the band mixed elements of punk rock and doo wop, combined with their garage rock mentality to create a sound all their own. Following the release of the band’s first album, they embarked on a world tour playing in the US, Europe and South America. The band gained a reputation for their wild, energetic and controversial live shows. More albums followed with 2008’s What’s For Dinner? and 2009’s Invisible Girl. During the tour for Invisible Girl, Leo Chip (of the band Deadly Snakes), joined The King Khan & BBQ Show for some live dates as a drummer/organist. However, in 2010 the band split. In 2015, The King Khan & BBQ Show returned with the album Bad News Boys. They have continued to tour off and on since 2011/2012. Throughout this band, after their initial split and even currently, King Khan and Mark Sultan have continually collaborated and recorded with other musicians and recorded music. Most recently Mark Sultan has released a full-length album called Let Me Out and King Khan released his solo album Murderburgers in 2017. This episode of Revolution Rock will feature selections from The King Khan & BBQ Show catalogue, along with a selection of other songs that both King Khan and Mark Sultan have recorded solo or with other groups.

Revolution Surf: The 13th Edition: Horror Themed Surf Rock

On Saturday February 23rd, the 13th annual edition of Revolution Surf will air on CJAM FM. To commemorate this episode, the program will be made up entirely of horror themed tracks. Horror themed surf songs have been something that has been present in surf music for quite some time. Many horror-based themes have surfaced in surf/instrumental rock songs going back to the beginnings of surf music. Most likely due to the influx of the many monster movies of the time period, this type of surf music has been combined with film and TV on countless occasions adding a different mood and dimension to whatever it is associated with. Horror themed surf music is often creepy and spooky sounding, although some of it has often been seen as kitschy or cheesy. This type of surf music has operated parallel to the sunnier themed surf songs that have been created in the genre. On this episode expect to hear spooky tracks from artists such as The Deadly Ones, The Ghastly Ones, Messer Chups and many others. This year’s Revolution Surf program will once again feature a guest segment from Surf Rock Radio’s Derk Brigante and more surprises!
