Revolution Rock: The 2023 Interviews & Show # 1020

In 2023, Revolution had seven interviews featured on the program. Five audio interviews were done and two email based interviews specifically for this website. As we have done in recent years, we did an episode containing highlights (or clips) from each of the audio interviews that we did and played some music/music relating to each of those artists. Below you will find some info about these interviews in addition to the playlist and download/streaming links to the episode.

An Interview with Jose Contreras (of By Divine Right) (February 2023):

Otto Motto is the latest album released by Toronto’s By Divine Right. A now legendary proto-indie rock band, By Divine Right is fronted by Jose Contreras and the band has seen many lineup changes throughout the years, in their previous lineups they featured Feist, Brendan Canning (of Broken Social Scene) and Brian Borcherdt (of Holy Fuck). The lineup of Jose Contreras (guitar/vocals), Geordie Dynes (drums) and Alysha Haugen (bass) had been together since 2010 (the lineup changed slightly in mid 2023). In 2016, the band recorded a full album cover of Depeche Mode’s Speak & Spell album in their rehearsal space, calling it Speak & Spell U.S. Otto Motto is a sprawling double album containing 14 tracks and features haunting psychedelic pop textures to the songs as the lyrics dig deep and are contemplative. We spoke with Jose covering the making of Otto Motto and a bit of the band’s history for Revolution Rock’s theme month based programming in February.

An Interview with Chris Jack (of The Routes) (February 2023):

The Routes have been releasing music since 2007, but lately they have been putting out two, or sometimes more releases a year. The band is lead by multi-instrumentalist/main songwriter Christopher Jack and currently features drummer Bryan Styles. In 2022, they released The Twang Machine, a surf tribute to Kraftwerk that works so well, in 2021 two instrumental albums (Instrumentals II and Shake Five) were released in addition to Mesmerised, a psych, reverb doused collection of tracks with vocals. While they are a garage punk band, they often blur the lines of that title pulling other influences creating something different each time. At the end of 2022, the instrumental album Get Past Go! was released and in February 2023, the garage-psych album that pulls in post-punk influences titled Lead Lined Clouds was released. Later in 2023 they released the all surf tribute to Buzzcocks titled Reverberation Addict. We spoke with Chris about The Routes history and making their recent albums as part of Revolution Rock’s annual theme month based programming in February.

An Interview with Evan Uschenko (of Ghost Woman) (May 2023):

Ghost Woman’s Anne, If was released in January 2023 on the Full Time Hobby label. Following 2022’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Anne, If picks up where that album left off. The music was written/recorded/performed by multi-instrumentalist Evan Uschenko on a Tascam 388 tape recorder in a large, expansive house. The press release states that when recording the album there was not much to do “except record music, watch old VHS movies, and cook meals over an open fire in the backyard.” Recording songs at different times of day also influenced the sounds and nuances present on Anne, If. Influences such as songs from 60s garage Nuggets compilation, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Love, Safe As Milk-era Captain Beefheart, Can, Neu!, and 60s Kinks/The Creation all float around in the musical atmosphere of these songs, however, these all add to the chemistry of the songs to expand Ghost Woman’s sound. In November 2023, Ghost Woman released Hindsight is 50/50. This album was recorded in a studio in France adding a moodier live feel, this time in collaboration with drummer for the group Ille van Dessel. We did a short interview with Evan for the website about Anne, If.

An Interview with Mononegatives (June 2023):

Crossing Visual Field is the second full-length album by London, Ontario’s Mononegatives. Their sound has been described as “raw punk meets new wave” and with 2021’s fast selling and critically acclaimed Apparatus Division, Mononegatives set themselves apart as a band experimenting with the punk meets new wave genre. Featuring Rob Brake on guitar/synth/vocals, Aaron Wallis bass and David Cereghini on drums, Crossing Visual Field was recorded once again with producer Preston Lobzun, but this time at a home studio in Scarborough. The band spent two years writing, recording and preparing for this record. With extra sonic details this time around, Crossing Visual Field brings a new atmosphere and broader scope to Mononegatives previous anxious nervous energy dynamic. We spoke with the members of Mononegatives for this website and covered the making of the album and a bit of the band’s history.

An Interview with Don Pyle (of Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet) (July 2023):

In 1993, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet released their third full-length album titled Sport Fishin’: The Lure of the Bait, The Luck of the Hook. Prior to recording the album the band was quite busy. Whether it was touring, rehearsing, recording music for the Kids In The Hall TV Series or recording singles, it was a whirlwind of activity for the band. Before the recording of Sport Fishin’, SMOASP recorded some singles with Steve Albini at his home studio. Some of these tracks would wind up on a few different releases such as the Dog & Squeegie single released in 1992 on the Estrus label and the Take Outs single released on the Derivative label in August of 1993. Just before Christmas of 1992 however, they recorded and mixed over a five-day period with Steve Albini at the Chicago Recording Company studio. The results would be the Sport Fishin’ album. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album’s release we played the album in full on the program (in July) and also spoke with drummer Don Pyle about recording the album during that time period.

An Interview with Bry Webb (September 2023):

“Thunder Bay” was the first single released by Canadian singer/songwriter Bry Webb from his album Run With Me. Inspired by a desire to sing and play music again after not releasing music for quite a few years, the songs that make up Run With Me are made up with inspiration to play again and the connections/contributions from different musicians over Webb’s career. Also known for being the lead vocalist in Constantines, Webb’s album Run With Me is his third full-length release and his first new album since 2014’s Free Will (there was also a live album, Live at Massey Hall in 2015). We spoke with Bry Webb about making the album Run With Me and the challenges that came along with it, we spoke of The Constantines, his early bands, and Webb’s earlier solo albums.

An Interview with Tommy Stinson (October 2023):

Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire released their debut album Wronger in June 2023. The album collects a mix of alt-country, rockabilly, folk songs and features musicians Tommy Stinson and Chip Roberts. Stinson and Roberts’ history goes back many years, he even helped co-write a song on Stinson’s Bash & Pop album Anything Could Happen in 2007. But, for those of you who don’t know Tommy got his start playing bass in the Minneapolis band The Replacements, then went on to play in numerous groups such as Perfect, Guns n’ Roses, Soul Asylum, Bash & Pop. Wronger got its start with some sessions recorded in Texas with Christine Smith around 2016/2017 with John Doe on bass, the rest were recorded in Stinson’s New York studio. There are several different musicians on this album that all add to its makeup, but overall it comes off as a stripped down collection of songs that flows together so naturally. Revolution Rock spoke with Tommy Stinson about Wronger's creation, a bit of his musical history with Perfect, The Replacements Let It Be reissue and more.

2023 Album Highlights & Shows 1017, 1016, 1014

For our annual albums of the year episodes, Revolution Rock once again did not rank any of the albums with any specific number. The following selections for the two episodes posted here feature a mix of albums from 2023 in no specific order, but all of them were albums that we enjoyed. Below you will also find four write-ups from albums that were released in 2023. Following these words are playlists and download/listening links to two episodes featuring music released in 2023.

Psychic Void – Cemetery Eyes

Described as psych punk, mixing in elements of 80s hardcore, punk and psychedelia, Cemetery Eyes is the third full-length album from Windsor, Ontario’s Psychic Void. Picking up where 2019’s Skeleton Paradise left off, guitarist Josh Kaiser, bassist Matt Menard and drummer Sean Carpenter add more grit to their sound as Jesse Knight’s vocals bring another element to the music tapping into themes of paranoia, the surreal, authority, brat boys and existential emptiness. Recorded and produced by guitarist Josh Kaiser, Cemetery Eyes is just eight tracks long and was self-released on cassette/digitally. 

“In My Head” starts Cemetery Eyes off with fuzzy guitar and bass that sound both like hardcore punk and the burnt out sounds of Goggs. Driving drums and bass propel this track as vocalist Jesse Knight howls throughout adding even more atmosphere to this opening scuzzy track before “Wash It Down” begins. Psych driven garage riffs drift overtop of floating drums and deep cutting baselines as lyrics “This very strange world’s got you feeling like you’re stuck in a rut/Rock in your head/ They keep coming for you, man” taps into a world of paranoia and lack of thought. “Something Sweet” features lyrics such as “I’m dancing every night while I laugh in the dark/be better to yourself/ That’s a good place to start” and the chorus of “So let the poison hit my tongue/It’s what I need to have some fun” that conjures euphoric existential themes in between an overall grimy psych punk groove, “Back 2 Reality” is a faster track featuring intense guitar and bass riffs, punk drums that brings scuzzy hardcore punk influences, “Brat Boy” ignites punk and fiery psych vibes with character driven lyrics about a bratty kid that can’t seem to break bad habits, “The Man” features venomous socially critical lyrics and punk saturated tempos, while synth wave and horror punk dominate “Hear Me Out” and the haunting title track. Cemetery Eyes delivers grittier psych punk sounds and an introspective look that reveals the cracks in our modern world of malaise that is hard to escape.

Mononegatives – Crossing Visual Field

Crossing Visual Field is the second full-length album by London, Ontario’s Mononegatives. Their sound has been described as “raw punk meets new wave” and with 2021’s fast selling and critically acclaimed Apparatus Division, Mononegatives set themselves apart as a band experimenting with the punk meets new wave genre. The band spent two years writing, recording and preparing for this record. “North Carolina Atomic Bomb” was the lead off single for this album. Described as an atmospheric dark synth-wave track, this song features what sounds like a malfunctioning synthesizer, buzzing bass and crunchy guitar sounds tuning into an almost post punk electronic frequency as Brake sings lines such as “Splitting an atom/Flicking a switch,” “Frequencies shifting frequently” and “A clock moving backwards/The world spins in reverse/Never a moment/You can afford to waste” describing a wasteland of the future and technological ruin. The way the song is executed here is tense, restless and sounds like it is about to implode at any minute. Living in the Future” is a bass and midi-sounding synthesizer driving track with lyrics that convey a post-apocalyptic world, while “Deficit” ends Crossing Visual Field. The post punk/garage track with a thought provoking chorus of “Tomorrow is hand to mouth” leaves open a bleak, yet fragmented outcome between the apocalyptic worlds described throughout this album and our modern day dystopia. With Crossing Visual Field, Mononegatives combine elements of post punk, synth rock, punk, garage and the lo-fi genre into its own thing. With a deeper sense of complexity and experimentation, themes of distant and not so distant dystopias, nuclear paranoia and the apocalypse, all wrap around a new sense of atmosphere and musical structure. The songs found here are not just one thing, but many things at once. They are a bit cryptic and can elicit different meanings on repeat listens. Crossing Visual Field brings Mononegatives into a new focus as they travel across different sonic landscapes.

Ghost Woman – Anne, If

Ghost Woman’s Anne, If was released in January 2023 on the Full Time Hobby label. Following 2022’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Anne, If picks up where that album left off. “3 Weeks Straight” features 60s sounding guitars, heavy drums and deep bass grooves hold down the beat, while lyrically the song searches for meaning in the complex glow of the light and darkness of a relationship. The chorus of “I can feel you under my skin” creeps and crawls with an eeriness emphasizing a presence that is omnipresent. “Anne, If” pulls from the large pool of garage psych sounds of the Nuggets compilation with a touch of The Yardbirds as lyrically, “Anne, if you're lonely/Listen to your words/There's nothing I can say/Living yesterday” deals with nostalgic complications that are hard to break free of, while the chorus juxtaposes this with the words “I am yours/I am yours too.” “Tripped” features vocals by Nick Hay (the bassist from the Ghost Woman live band) that evoke a Mark Lanegan howl as the bass, guitar, drums and background harmonies (all supplied by Evan Uschenko) offer a hypnotic psychedelia groove. The lyrics conjure up themes of haunting isolation and contemplation. On Anne, If we are presented with music that was described as being created during a “strange new chapter” in Uschenko’s life. The songs that we gravitate towards on this album feature lyrics that are sometimes cryptic and open ended. It is something that travels with you after and during each listen. If this was a strange new chapter for Uschenko, then we are also a part of it by extension of this album. With Anne, If the music is saturated with an analog warmth and feel that provides nuanced musical moments that pull you into the world that it creates.

Ghost Woman - Hindsight is 50/50

At the end of November 2023, Ghost Woman released their 3rd full-length album and second release in 2023. Hindsight is 50/50 changes up the dynamics of the first two Ghost Woman albums, which were recorded on 4 tracks by Evan Uschenko, who also performed all the instrumentation with the exception of a few tracks. This album as Uschenko stated in press releases “is meant to be played live.” Ghost Woman seems to have had a relentless touring schedule, but that seems to have benefited this album greatly. Adding drummer and co-songwriter Ille van Dessel into the mix, the songs take on a more live spontaneous direction. There are heavy guitar tones and drums throughout the record with bass looming in the background and lyrics that are a bit cryptic once again, but the mood and atmosphere of these tracks cut deep with reverb and heavier psychedelic grooves. 

Although Uschenko has stated “Vocals are not important. We prefer to not be understood. If you’re looking for meaning in these lyrics, might I suggest buying a Lenny Bruce record instead?” the lyrics and songs evoke a meaning and arrive on edge with the music found here. “Alright, Alright” features psych guitar lines loaded with reverb as drums and tambourine add to the groove and twang while hazy lyrics such as “Take a little walk with me/Just a look inside/It might even set you free/I won't lie” that seem to either be searching for something in the dark sonic tones here, or just emphasizing a feeling, “Highly Unlikely” is intense and arrives with some blues textures as lyrics tangle in another layer of subtle complexity, “Otessa” is a faster track featuring heavy drums and abstract vocals from van Dessel and Uschenko’s tense, psychedelic guitar work, “Yoko” swaggers as it builds up to an erupting moment of blistering guitars and drums, “Juan” with its atmospheric guitar parts, solid yet characterized drumbeats and cryptic catchy choruses captures the essence of the band, while the title track simmers in the darker noisier textures. On Hindsight is 50/50, Ghost Woman develop a sound that is complex, yet simple that is layered in different psychedelic and garage inspired tones with no need for evaluation of past efforts. In this new band dynamic, Ghost Woman find themselves.

Anne, If: An Interview with Evan Uschenko of Ghost Woman & Show # 988

Ghost Woman’s Anne, If was released in January 2023 on the Full Time Hobby label. Following 2022’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Anne, If picks up where that album left off. The music was written/recorded/performed by multi-instrumentalist Evan Uschenko on a Tascam 388 tape recorder in a large, expansive house. The press release states that when recording the album there was not much to do “except record music, watch old VHS movies, and cook meals over an open fire in the backyard.” Recording songs at different times of day also influenced the sounds and nuances present on Anne, If. Influences such as songs from 60s garage Nuggets compilation, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Love, Safe As Milk-era Captain Beefheart, Can, Neu!, and 60s Kinks/The Creation all float around in the musical atmosphere of these songs, however, these all add to the chemistry of the songs to expand Ghost Woman’s sound.

“Welcome” offers a short introduction to the album before “Broke” starts with its dusty, yet fuzzy grooves. As the bass and drums roll in, crunchy guitars and Uschenko’s ethereal vocals sit atop with lyrics such as “Oh, there was some I would call on/You exist on the phone,” and “Another day gone/What if I lose it all/Another day alone/And if I lose it all,” themes of disconnection, loneliness, self doubt and a sense of yearning present themselves, in between searing guitar solos. “3 Weeks Straight” continues with the 60s sounding guitars, heavy drums and deep bass grooves hold down the beat, while lyrically the song searches for meaning in the complex glow of the light and darkness of a relationship. The chorus of “I can feel you under my skin” creeps and crawls with an eeriness emphasizing a presence that is omnipresent. “Anne, If” pulls from the large pool of garage psych sounds of the Nuggets compilation with a touch of The Yardbirds as lyrically, “Anne, if you're lonely/Listen to your words/There's nothing I can say/Living yesterday” deals with nostalgic complications that are hard to break free of, while the chorus juxtaposes this with the words “I am yours/I am yours too.” “Street Meet” offers a short instrumental break as is moves forward with propelling, Can and Neu! influenced rhythms, “The End of a Gun” was the lead off single for Anne, If. With its chiming 12-string guitar growing out of The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane mould, garage rhythms from The Kinks and flashes of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young harmonies, this driving track seems to operate like a time warp while also peering into the present. 

“Lo Extrano” is another highlight featuring acoustic guitar, sparse drums and bass, psychedelic guitar and reflective lyrics that also emphasize a longing. The song’s languid nature is also elevated by the stunning pedal steel country guitar work provided by musician Ryan “Skinny” Dyck. "Arline” is an unhurried psych track with acoustic guitar, otherworldly sounding electric guitar parts and strong vocal harmonies. Lyrically, with words such as “Will this world keep on turning/My ear’s always burning,” “Arline, I can hear you/Try my best to feel you/Tired of black and white,” and a chorus of “I don’t know,” the song seems to question the unknown workings of the universe around us, while “Down Again” brings a heavy 60s psych groove with touches of 70s Krautrock ala Can and cryptic lyrics. “Tripped” features vocals by Nick Hay (the bassist from the Ghost Woman live band) that evoke a Mark Lanegan howl as the bass, guitar, drums and background harmonies (all supplied by Evan Uschenko) offer a hypnotic psychedelia groove. The lyrics conjure up themes of haunting isolation and contemplation. “So Long” ends out Anne, If with trippy sounding electric guitar and vocal harmonies.

On Anne, If we are presented with music that was described as being created during a “strange new chapter” in Uschenko’s life. The songs that we gravitate towards on this album feature lyrics that are sometimes cryptic and open ended. It is something that travels with you after and during each listen. If this was a strange new chapter for Uschenko, then we are also a part of it by extension of this album. With Anne, If the music is saturated with an analog warmth and feel that provides nuanced musical moments that pull you into the world that it creates.

RR: The press release for Anne, If said the album was made “living in a large, expansive house with nothing to do except record music, watch old VHS movies, and cook meals over an open fire in the backyard.” What type of movies did you watch on VHS and do you feel that recording in this way (sort of isolated) informed the songwriting at all for this album? Did it differ from how you recorded the 2022 self-titled album?

EU: “Cannibal Holocaust” on repeat. 

RR: How do you approach songwriting in general? When you come up with songs is it usually in the same way or does it differ from track to track?

EU: I basically have mini-strokes and psychotic episodes. I always keep microphones placed around any room I inhabit for longer than 48 hours.

RR: You mentioned during interviews salvaging and replacing instruments from various spaces, including burned down rehearsal spaces and broken down vans. What sort of equipment were you able to retrieve?

EU: You ever play that game called “telephone”? It’s kinda like that. 

RR: Where did you come up with the name for the project? Does the idea of hauntings influence the way you write lyrics or record your sounds?

EU: “Ghost woman” is probably the worst band name ever conjured. Any name replacement recommendations are welcomed. 

RR: How did you assemble your touring band? What do they offer to the sound of Ghost Woman? What do you see being the most noticeable difference in the project's live sound and sound on record?

EU: The most noticeable difference is: Live, the music actually sounds good. 

RR: Another aspect of Ghost Woman that isn’t talked about as much is your music videos. Maybe you can talk about what inspired you to make the videos for “Broke” from Anne, If and “Behind Your Eyes” from the first album? Perhaps you could tell us a bit about these songs origins?

EU: "Broke" was produced by Bruce the Rabbit, who is in the music video actually. He was passed out in front of our Belgian home when we found him. We brought him in and tried to nurse him back to health. He ended up just raiding the cupboards and draining all our bottles. The video is something that he made when we had gone out to see some friends. I guess he had access to my computer and found a way send the video to various buyers. Safe to say, we don’t keep in contact with him much anymore. 

“Behind your eyes” video was a single roll of exposed Kodak film stock that was mysteriously left in my family P.O. Box somewhere in western Canada. I had access to a dark room and processed the film one evening as a means to avoid drinking. I shelved it because of the horrific nature of the film. There are about 10 mins of footage on that reel that should never see the light of day, but instead I figured I would use the band as a platform to release the less disturbing footage. RR: Anne, If features a few contributions from other musicians. Nick Hay appears on lead vocals for “Tripped” and Ryan “Skinny” Dyck provides pedal steel on “Lo Extrano.” How did they become involved in these tracks in this way?

EU: They wouldn’t leave the house when I asked them to. So naturally I figured they wanted to stay. I had a windowless room that I would keep them in and feed them a bowl of unwashed chickpeas a day until they performed the take I was pleased with. 

RR: Ghost Woman has toured Europe quite a bit. Are there any plans for any US/Canadian dates in the future and what is next for Ghost Woman?

EU: Yes. What’s next? I wanna know who’s on first.

2022 Album Highlights & Shows # 966, 965, 964

For our annual albums of the year episodes, Revolution Rock once again did not rank any of the albums with any specific number. The following selections for the two episodes posted here feature a mix of albums from 2022 in no specific order, but all of them were albums that we enjoyed. Below you will also find six write-ups from albums that were released in 2022, three written by Dave and three written by Adam. Following these words are playlists and download/listening links to two episodes featuring music released in 2022.

The Sadies - Colder Streams 

Colder Streams is the 11th studio album by The Sadies. Produced by Richard Reed Parry and recorded by Pietro Amato in his Montreal studio Skybarn, the album was made between 2019 and 2021. Colder Streams was completed and ready to go prior to the unexpected passing of Dallas Good in February of 2022. The album is the culmination of the decades of the bands work and combines their mixture of country, garage, punk, surf and bluegrass music so seamlessly. Lyrically, the songs dig deep, as The Sadies often do, but there is something special found in the songs here. Songs such as “Stop and Start” brings forth waves psychedelic and fuzzy garage music as lyrics “The sadness comes like a setting sun/The war is won when the fight is done” delve into themes of hope, despair and spirituality. “Message To Belial” points towards bleak, apocalyptic imagery that reflects our modern times while musically the mid-tempo, trippy and psychedelic number is an example The Sadies in their musical element. “More Alone” is a folk/cinematic surf inspired track. It is an intense and lyrically poignant track, as it is believed to be about the passing of friend Justin Townes Earle. With lyrics it goes further “I learned to accept that there’s nothing anyone can say/It hurts me to think about what could have been/And everything that won’t ever be,” “I feel more alone/Then when I’m alone,” and “In this day and age/Rage has become all the Rage,” which also touches on social commentary. 

“All The Good” is a folk/Americana track sung by Travis Good. More depth is revealed throughout the lyrics “When I search for answers/Questions are all I find/I wish I knew what I needed to do this time,” “Better Yet” jumps into garage and punk featuring fuzz guitar from Jon Spencer, “Ginger Moon” is an uptempo number, “Cut Up High and Dry” blends garage, psych and bluegrass, while “End Credits” fittingly ends Colder Streams with a moving instrumental in a cinematic, Ennio Morricone-inspired fashion. The Sadies have been a part of the indie and underground music scenes in Canada and throughout other parts of the world for quite some time now. They have often been called “unclassifiable rock” due to the sounds that they create. Colder Streams has been said to be their strongest album to date. It is hard to argue with that since everything found here captures all the best elements of The Sadies live dynamic. With the tragic passing of Dallas Good, Colder Streams serves as a document and an important moment in the bands history as they forge a new path ahead into the future.

Dion Lunadon - Beyond Everything

Beyond Everything is the second full-length album by Dion Lunadon. Previously of The D4 and A Place To Bury Strangers, the album was released via In The Red Records in June 2022. Pulled from a large collection of songs written between 2017 and 2019, Beyond Everything adds more of a dynamic element to Dion’s sound building on components of his 2017 album, while not forgetting them completely. “By My Side” begins with a drumbeat and wild, unhinged guitar sounds. Lyrically the words in the song lend themselves to the interpretative side of things as they rise and waver between the guitars, drums and distortion prevalent throughout the vocals. “It’s The Truth” cuts through with distorted guitar, thrashy sounding drums and a smooth bassline that glues it all together. This untamed injection of garage and psych rock balances itself with lyrics that evoke a feeling of absence that makes the heart grow fonder. “Screw Diver” is one of the longer tracks found on Beyond Everything. With pummeling drums and guitar riffs, the song contrasts this with a calming, yet unnerving vocal melody. “Elastic Diagnostic” is another highlight found on this album. Starting with a fuzzy, driving bassline and the lyric “Hungry just to be alive,” the song builds around the hums and tones conjured by the guitars on this track. As it captivates with its deep spellbinding groove, noise and abstract lyrics “Close my eyes/Get lost in the fall,” the song gets lost in the moment as Lunadon summons up shades of a Fun House-era Iggy Pop vocally. “Glass Doll” attacks with a distorted punk rock fragility as “Too Hard To Love, Too Young To Die” digs into a 60s garage pop meets punk atmosphere. With its repetitive lyrics, use of space and undeniable intensity, lyrically it seems to address a desire to overcome difficult hardships. 

The press release for Beyond Everything reads: “Beyond your skin, beyond your screen, beyond what you think you know. What lies in this area? An area with no opinions, motives, sides or divisions. An area where governments and capitalists have no currency and the absolute truth reigns supreme.” The songs that make up this album don’t adhere to any specific theme other than themselves. They illustrate a use of space that only adds to their intensity, melody, noise and overall impact. Beyond Everything resonates in more ways than one. 

Ghost Woman - Self-Titled

Ghost Woman’s debut self-titled album was released in July 2022 on UK label Full Time Hobby. The album was recorded, produced and played entirely by musician Evan Uschenko, a Canadian born musician, who for the last while has been a touring musician as part of Michael Rault’s touring band. Touring with the likes of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and Jacco Gardner and Mild High Club, the insight he gained inspired him to create this debut album. Although they did release the Lost Echoes EP in 2016, this album is their first full-length album. Ghost Woman simmers with the embers of 60s garage nuggets compilation tracks, while at the same time it has a hazy laidback groove that is reminiscent of 60s and 70s music. With references points in the press release such as Kurt Vile and The Black Angels (I’d also add The Kinks, Captain Beefheart, Jefferson Airplane, Can and Jon McKiel), “All the Time” starts off Ghost Woman’s debut album with a hazy kaleidoscope of 60s rock grooves. The listener gets sucked into the song and album as Uschenko’s vocals captivate when combined with lyrics such as “I haven't felt this cold in days/The wind it blew your name away,” and “But I can't get you off my mind/And lately someone's leaving all the time,” the bass groove on “Do You” combined with the psychedelic and 60s early Rolling Stones vibe present on the guitars float within the dynamics found on this album. 

Songs such as “Behind Your Eyes” are indebted to The Byrds and garage rock, lyrically the lo-fi hooks in the chorus “But you won’t understand me this time/Not much there behind your eyes” paints a mood and hazy picture that are abstract and haunting, “Dead and Gone” (originally on 2016’s Lost Echoes EP) is a fuzzy, lo-fi uptempo number that drives forward with an incendiary fashion, “Jreaming” is a lackadaisical song. It sounds like the tape was left rolling and this song was captured by accident, the song is unique and entrancing with its hallucinatory lyrics dealing with the complexity for the sense of being free while also being in need. With a second album coming in January 2023 (Anne, If) and live shows, Ghost Woman’s debut is a mosaic of sounds that could be called modern vintage. However, Ghost Woman’s kaleidoscope of hazy musical dynamics leaves the listener in a trance that is fleeting, yet stirring.

Black Country, New Road - Ants from Up There 

Ants from Up There may be the single greatest album about failure ever recorded. Isaac Wood’s intimate lyrics are less poetry than a confessional: personal insecurities, social anxiety, and isolation paint the landscapes of Black Country, New Road’s world. The portraits presented are intimate and yet elliptical: crumbs of toast scattered in a bed are the insidious signs of a relationship’s dissolution; tabletop RPG characters become stand-ins rejecting English nationalism; wet dreams of Charli XCX are portents of masculine insecurity; while a song about messing up cooking while following a YouTube tutorial evokes fears of failure and inadequacy. These probing psychological explorations are propelled by one of 2022’s greatest musical evolutions: the Slint-meets-klezmer band sounds of their debut are completely uprooted, exchanged for lusher chamber pop compositions that evoke the likes of Talk Talk, Sufjan Stevens, and Wolf Parade. There are even nods to pre-rock popular music such as the music hall touches on “Chaos Space Marine” and “Bread Song.” Then there is the band’s use of space on these compositions, which results less in songs than worlds to inhabit (see the masterfully sustained tension on “Snowglobes” or the near-ambient passages of “Good Will Hunting”). While this appears to be Isaac Wood’s last album with the band he helped to found, he is leaving on a high note, with Ants from Up There acting us Black Country, New Road’s magnum opus.

Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

In a year of incredible double albums, none seemed as sprawling or as satisfying as Big Thief’s whimsically titled Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You. The album acts as a revelation in many ways. We see Big Thief eke away from their usual somber bleary-eyed folk to embrace noisy indie rock, country sing-alongs, orchestral pop, and rhythmic trip hop. Yet the even bigger reveal is just how fun the band can be. Sure, Adrianne Lenker still can break your heart and make you weep on the more intimate cuts, but tracks like “Spud Infinity” and “Blue Lightning” are just plain fun, complete with non-sense lyrics and in-between band banter. This is the sound of a group letting their hair down, taking their selves slightly less seriously, and coming across all the better for it. There is nary a dud across these twenty songs, and the overall experience shows Big Thief to be more than just another maudlin indie folk act: this astonishing turn shows the band to be one of the most versatile and ambitious acts working today.

black midi - Hellfire

Jazz-rock. Prog-punk. Baroque-noise. There are a dozen labels one could cast on black midi, each feeling somewhat right yet ultimately off. The greatest compliment to pay a band these days is to admit nothing else quite sounds like them, and while there are elements of Scott Walker, Captain Beefheart, and King Crimson in the London trio’s sound, there is no mistaking the group for anyone else. Like the shifting visceral hellscape of the album cover, Hellfire’s sound is constantly in flux. This Heat style postpunk breaks down into Jacque Brel theatrics. Laser focused punk rhythms morph into acid jazz. Geordie Greep’s vocals threaten to shift from wavering baritone to barked shrieks at a moment’s notice. The album’s a constant reminder that, hey buddy, don’t get too comfortable: everything changes, nothing is free from mutability. Considering the comfort we seek in the assurance of patterns and predictability, it only makes sense that black midi compose a hell from an ever shifting wasteland. Yet give yourself over to it, embrace the pull of the flux, and you may find the hellfire not too bad to drift in. For all it offers, and all the album refuses to do, Hellfire is one of the most startling and original works of the year.

JSD 2022 (Show # 966)

Every December 22nd, CJAM FM holds a 24-hour radio marathon entitled Joe Strummer Day. Its purpose is to confront poverty and homelessness in the Windsor/Detroit area all wrapped around the music of Joe Strummer and The Clash. This year featured an astonishing and revealing amount of interviews addressing concerns in the area by CJAM station manager Walter Petrichyn, but it also featured some great music and other interview programs (many of them combined interviews and programs about poverty and homelessness related issues with music. Some were just music). For Revolution Rock we decided to do a program that was mainly a music program, but one that also brought up different places in Windsor for people in need during this time of year. We called the program Time and The Tide. Named after the B-Side to the Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros single Tony Adams and also found on the newly released Joe Strummer 002 box set. We featured a selection of tracks from this new box set in addition to some rare Clash live recordings featuring Keith Levene in 1976, bands associated with The Clash and some Clash/Joe Strummer covers.
