From November 8th-November 17th, CJAM FM will be holding its annual pledge drive fundraiser. For over 40 years, CJAM FM has been serving the Windsor/Detroit community as a non-profit, campus/community-based radio station. It offers unique programming and music you won’t find anywhere else in the Windsor/Detroit area. As a non-profit organization we rely on our annual funding drive to support everyday essentials, equipment, and operations—ensuring our independence and ability to serve our community. In terms of content, whether it is obscure punk, hardcore tracks, indie rock, world music, jazz, soul, electronic music or everything in-between and beyond, CJAM has it and is highlighting it in some fashion. Last year, CJAM had a 40th anniversary party and celebrations and this year we also have many different events in the community coming up.

If you didn’t get a chance there’s still time to support CJAM FM. We offer some great incentives as a thank you for your support for non-profit, listener-supported radio. Whether you listen online through our archives, stream from our website or listen on the FM dial CJAM is here to provide with content you won’t hear anywhere else. Music, spoken word programming, exclusive interviews, a different perspective and more. Your contributions help us maintain our annual budget and ensure that we can continue to bring you diverse programming and local voices. CJAM 40th Anniversary Pledge Drive and Archive Compilation Album & Shows # 1013, 1011, 1010, 1009

This November CJAM geared up to celebrate its 40th anniversary with their annual pledge drive and some events! 40 years of broadcasting and making sonic connections in the Windsor/Detroit area. A lot has changed since 1983, but one thing that hasn’t changed is CJAM providing a voice and content for the community and public as a whole that wouldn’t otherwise be heard. Whether it is obscure punk, hardcore tracks, indie rock, world music, jazz, soul, electronic music or everything in-between and beyond that CJAM has it and is highlighting it in some fashion. To celebrate this event CJAM held several events in the community ending off the pledge drive on November 18th with a party featuring live performances and a live broadcast from Art Windsor Essex.

But, if you didn’t get a chance there’s still time to support CJAM FM. We offer some great incentives as a thank you for your support for non-profit, listener-supported radio. Whether you listen online through our archives, stream from our website or listen on the FM dial CJAM is here to provide with content you won’t hear anywhere else. I also wanted to talk a bit the compilation that CJAM FM has available this year. We have a limited edition compilation featuring recordings made in the CJAM studios from the past 17 years covering the years 2006-2023. Currently available as a pre-order, these are one of a kind performances that were done specifically for the station and you won’t be able to get anywhere else. There are performances here from artists such as Danny Kroha (of The Gories), By Divine Right, Shotgun Jimmie, Psychic Void, Steph Copeland, What Seas What Shores, The Locusts Have No King, Raised By Weeds (an early band featuring musician Paul Jacobs), Barzin and more! Twenty different artists and if that isn’t enough it is coming out on limited edition cassette (w/download code) and a zine that features each artist commenting on the song and performance featured in this set.

CJAM FM 2023 Pledge Drive & Show # 981, 980, 979, 978, 977

This week CJAM FM is holding its annual pledge drive. It is the only time of year CJAM reaches out to the community for financial support to continue daily operations at the station. This year, the station is celebrating 40 years on the FM dial come November as independent non-commercial radio, giving a voice to underrepresented artists, viewpoints, and cultures. We are playing with one of our nicknames, The Jamming One, for creative inspiration in our new exclusive line of t-shirts, tote bags, stickers and flyers. CJAM FM is a non-profit campus community radio station located at the University of Windsor. It has been on the FM dial offering alternative programming to the mainstream since 1983. The station is also available online and has past programs available to listen for 30 days, in addition to live streaming options.

“For 40 years, CJAM has been a leader in alternative spoken word and music programming; carving out a space to provide experiential learning opportunities to students and providing them opportunities to learn how to record audio, edit, and create original radio programs for audiences in Windsor and Detroit,”
says Walter S. Petrichyn, Station Manager at CJAM 99.1 FM.

Program partnerships with student life such as the law department’s Magna Carta Pro-Bono Students, the nursing department’s No Scrubs and St. Clair College’s MediaPlex program are a few examples of shows that highlight the station’s ever-growing program base that has been a launching pad for careers in the music industry, journalism, and sports broadcasting. “We have had Jammers go on to work for AM 800, SOCAN, CBC, Bell Media, The Maple Leafs, and plenty more. It’s incredible to see our volunteers take flight with their professional careers and we want to continue supporting them and providing these rich opportunities,” says Petrichyn.

Last year, the station did not hold a pledge drive. Shows like Revolution Rock would not exist without something like CJAM FM. The program as mentioned before is curated to offer a different side of independent music and it often digs deep. Branching off from 70s punk/new wave, the program also focuses on garage, indie, surf and alternative genres. Featuring new/old music within and beyond those genres, it offers something different. CJAM offers a voice to artists of all genres and to different spoken word and language based programs that would not have a platform otherwise. That alone is a great reason to support CJAM FM during this time.

This year, CJAM is offering the following prizes at different donation levels.

$5 – CJAM 2023 Pledge Drive “The Jamming One” Sticker design by CJAM’s Batool Yahya // @artbybatool.io on Instagram

$10 to 20 – Music Prize Pack (CDs/vinyl) accessible from the CJAM Prize Room

$100 – CJAM prize pack (including 2023 t-shirt, sticker, music prize pack and vintage t-shirt)

CJAM FM 2021 Fundraiser & Shows # 909 & 910

This past week marked CJAM FM’s annual funding drive. Once a year, CJAM does a week of programming devoted to raising funds for their funding drive. Being a non-profit campus and community based radio station CJAM FM’s fundraising looks to raise a $30,000 to maintain CJAM’s daily operations. As has been stated in the past, CJAM relies on listener and community support to continue broadcasting. For 38 years, CJAM FM has been offering music and spoken word programming unlike anywhere else in Windsor/Detroit and online through downloads/streaming and archives at www.cjam.ca.

In addition to broadcasting at 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit, CJAM has large online listenership. People listen from all over. Nowhere else will you hear this much independent, local, international, obscure, older, non-pop, non-commercial music. If you're sick of hearing the same 10 songs on mainstream radio, consider donating and thanking the hosts who dig each week to find the music you hear on CJAM. These funds go towards equipment, insurance, digital music storage space, staff salary, and other necessities that allow CJAM to operate day-to-day. CJAM is also looking to bring our operations further into our digital age with an updated website and a more user friendly mobile site. As mentioned, CJAM FM is a non-profit based radio station. You are not bombarded with ads and you don't have to pay a subscription fee. Whether listening online or on the FM dial, CJAM is something free for the community and by the community.

Revolution Rock in the last year and half has become syndicated across ten different campus/community stations in Canada being heard in more places than ever before. We curate a program weekly to offer a different side of independent music in the garage, 70s punk/new wave, indie, surf and alternative genres. We often feature exclusive interviews and branch out from these genres creating something different. Revolution Rock would not exist without CJAM, as would many of our great long running and new programs. CJAM offers a voice to artists of all genres and to different spoken word and language based programs that would not have a platform otherwise. That in itself is a great reason to support CJAM FM during this time.

CJAM also offer incentives as a thank you for your support.

CJAM 2020 Fundraiser & Shows # 854, 853

Every year CJAM FM holds an annual pledge drive o raise funds for the station. Being a non-profit campus based radio station, CJAM FM broadcasts to the Windsor/Detroit communities on 99.1 FM on the FM dial and is available to stream online through www.cjam.ca and through archived downloads. While the state of radio continues to change, CJAM still stays relevant in the programming and voice that it provides for spoken word and language based programs in addition music of all genres and types that would not have a platform otherwise.

This year CJAM has a goal of raising $30,000, which is 30% of their annual budget. The money goes towards funds for equipment, tariffs, insurance, staff salary, and other necessities for the general upkeep of the day-to-day operations at the station.  It is also going towards a proposed new website upgrade to bring us further into the digital age. By supporting CJAM, you are supporting independent, grassroots media that gives voice to those forgotten and ignored elsewhere. We generate very little in ad revenue and most of our ads are for local businesses. A program like Revolution Rock would not exist if it were not for something like CJAM FM. Every week the program digs deep into music often obscure and hard to find of the past, while also balancing it with newer music in garage, punk/new wave, surf, indie and related subgenres.

This year they are doing things a little bit differently. Since programs have had to switch to recording from home and the current state of the world with COVID 19, CJAM’s pledge drive is running from November 6th to November 20th, 2020. CJAM 2019 Fall Fundraiser & Shows # 797, 798, 800

This week marks CJAM FM’s fall fundraiser. Every year CJAM holds a pledge drive in which they raise funds to keep providing the unique programming that they offer every day. CJAM FM is a non-profit campus/community based radio station that provides music and spoken word programming to different parts of the Windsor/Detroit areas through 99.1 FM and online through downloads/streaming and archives at www.cjam.ca.

Earlier this year the Ontario Government announced a new change in university tuition fees giving student the ability to opt-out of any fees deemed non-essential under the Student Choice Initiative, which included campus radio. With no consultation or warning before the announcement, CJAM FM staff and volunteers were left scrambling to raise funds in the few months before the fall semester began to ensure financial stability. At the University of Windsor, CJAM FM has seen a 29% opt-out rate for the 2019 fall semester. This represents a decrease in the student levy fund of about $15,700 for the station. If the opt-out percentage remains the same for upcoming the winter semester, the station will lose roughly $31,400 this school year. “The fall fundraiser is extremely important for us because it represents a significant portion of our annual budget. While effectively combatting the loss in fees makes us optimistic, the fundraiser has always represented approximately 30% of our annual budget and is essential in maintaining our ability to broadcast.”  Station Manager Brady Holek stated in a recent press release.

For over 35 years now CJAM FM has continued to provide quality programming in the Windsor/Detroit areas often highlighting many events and issues while providing a different outlook from the usual mainstream media outlets. We also have a strong online audience that listens through our archives and live stream that is listened to worldwide. As I stated last year “CJAM provides the listener with something you won’t find anywhere else. A program like Revolution Rock would not exist anywhere else if it were not for a place like CJAM FM. If you listen to CJAM, regardless of how, consider making a donation to help the station continue to grow in the world of the broadcast arts that it provides on a daily basis."

CJAM is currently in the midst of their fall fundraiser and could use your support. If you would like to show your support for CJAM FM you can donate, here are the ways.

We also offer incentives as a thank you for your support.

CJAM FM Emergency Funding Drive & Show # 777

Due to a recent change from the Ontario government, CJAM FM’s funding is in jeopardy. We have already had to eliminate one of the three jobs at the station and 70% of our annual budget is at risk. The station is holding an emergency funding drive to help raise funds for CJAM FM at this time. CJAM and other Ontario campus stations serve as a source of alternative media to the mainstream. This is not just with music that we play, but with other spoken word programming that provides a look at different issues around the country that would not be heard otherwise. We are listened to at 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit and streamed/downloaded online by many listeners.

This article from !earshot online provides some perspective on the impact of how this will affect CJAM FM and other campus/community stations across ontario.  If would like to show your support at this time during our emergency funding drive you can make a donation online at https://www.grouprev.com/CJAMEmergency-revrock or https://www.grouprev.com/CJAMEmergency.

CJAM FM 2018 Pledge Drive & Show # 745

CJAM FM has been broadcasting for 35 years on the FM dial in the Windsor/Detroit area. Being a non-profit radio station that serves the Windsor/Detroit communities, the station relies heavily on support from donations to continue operations. Once a year the station holds an annual pledge drive to raise money to continue broadcasting unique programming that is not mandated by mainstream or corporate interests. This year the station has an overall goal of raising $35,000, which is roughly 30% of their annual budget. Although provided with plenty of new/old music to choose from, programmers at CJAM FM are not told to play and programs/playlists are curated by programmers based on what they like. This creates something original in the programming, whether it is a variety program, Jazz program or something else like many of our ethno-cultural/spoken word programming.

CJAM is an art form when you consider a particular show or program that is being broadcast. Whether you are listening to 99.1 FM in the Windsor/Detroit area or online via cjam.ca. CJAM was one of the first campus/community radio stations to have streaming available to listeners online in 1996 and is looking into developing a new mobile app and upgrading the current website. Support this year will go towards those developments, along with station upgrades to help CJAM stay relevant and important in our current digital age. Even with all there is that you can find online via streaming, CJAM has its own voice for independent music and spoken word voices that wouldn’t be heard otherwise. CJAM provides the listener with something you won’t find anywhere else. A program like Revolution Rock would not exist anywhere else if it were not for a place like CJAM FM. If you listen to CJAM, regardless of how, consider making a donation to help the station continue to grow in the world of the broadcast arts that it provides on a daily basis.

If you would like to show your support for CJAM FM you can donate, here are the ways. We also offer incentives as a thank you for your support.

CJAM FM 2017 Pledge Drive & Show # 690

Every year CJAM FM holds an annual pledge drive that runs for one week. Being a non-profit based campus/community radio station, CJAM relies on donations and support from the community to help make up 30% of their annual budget. It has been on the FM dial since 1983, and this website that you are currently visiting is for a radio program entitled Revolution Rock, that has been airing on the station since June of 2004. This year the station’s goal is to raise $30,000 to help update their website and general things in the studios we have there. In addition to upgrading the website and the online stream, there are plans to integrate the website site with a new app to make it easier for people to listen to the station on their mobile devices. CJAM has a large online listenership, in addition to the people that listen throughout the Windsor/Detroit areas at 99.1 FM on the FM dial. You can stream the station live anytime online and download program archives from any program that airs on the station, but as we move further into the digital age, there is a need for upgrades and improvements.

CJAM celebrates the alternative to the mainstream. In terms of music and spoken word content, there are things that are heard on stations like CJAM FM that you just won’t hear anywhere else. Revolution Rock in particular digs deep into the musical past often pulling up some very obscure gems that you may not know have existed, but it also blends that element of musicality with new music as well. This program provides a weekly mix of music from the garage rock, 70s punk/new wave, surf, alternative and indie genres. Whether you listen online via downloads/streams or on 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit, CJAM FM is a great station to listen to and to support.

If you would like to show your support for CJAM FM you can donate, here are the ways. We also offer incentives as a thank you for your support.

CJAM FM Pledge Drive 2016 & Show # 637

Every year CJAM FM holds an annual pledge drive. The reason for this is CJAM (like other campus/community based radio stations in Canada) is a non-profit organization. All of the money raised during the week of pledge drive (which occurs for one week, once a year) goes towards the station, which is built on volunteers and programming made for the Windsor/Detroit communities. This year CJAM FM has a goal of raising $40, 000 dollars for their pledge drive campaign. You can show your support by donating in a variety of ways. Incentives are offered as a thank you for your support. Here are some reasons why a station like CJAM FM is still important and relevant in our modern digital age.

1. Programming is alternative to the mainstream. All of the programming on CJAM FM is created by volunteer programmers who put in their own time to make unique programs. Many independent bands from Windsor and Detroit are featured on our programs. If it were not for a place like CJAM, many bands would not have their voices heard in a larger context. The same goes for spoken word content featured on the station. CJAM broadcasts in over eight different languages. CJAM does things differently for the community and is created by students and programmers from our communities.

2. CJAM day by day. As mentioned during last year’s pledge drive, CJAM FM was the second campus radio station in Canada to have live streaming content. They first began doing so in 1996. This was done so because of supporters of the station. Funds raised during pledge drive also go to assist in the day-to-day operations at the station. They go towards radio broadcasting equipment, microphones, CD players, computers, their website and the general upkeep of the station.

3. Campus/community radio is still relevant. Despite the plethora of music, podcasts and internet based content, CJAM FM provides a multiple, more focused viewpoint on a variety of musical genres and spoken word/political content that is often ignored by mainstream media. In many cases, DJs provide unique programming that you won’t find anywhere else. By listening to CJAM FM, you won’t get lost in the digital world of the Internet. You can find interesting content simply by tuning in on 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit or by streaming/downloading programs off CJAM’s website.

If you have ever listened to the station online or on the FM dial, you can show your support for the station by calling 519-971-3630 (in Windsor) or 1-855-344-2526 (in Detroit/out of town) or by donating securely online at www.cjam.ca or at https://grouprev.com/cjamfm

CJAM FM Pledge Drive 2015 & Show # 584

Every year CJAM FM, a non-profit based campus/community radio station in the Windsor/Detroit area holds an annual pledge drive. One week during the year CJAM asks for support from the communities in which it serves on a daily basis. Over the most recent years due in part to help from the Windsor/Detroit communities, CJAM FM managed to secure a new frequency as 99.1 FM under protected status, something that during its run when it was on 91.5 on the FM dial it never had. Most recently the station increased their wattage from 500 watts to 2, 084 watts, reaching more people and branching out further than it ever has before.

The content that CJAM FM provides is an alternative to the mainstream. Artists local and independent find a voice throughout the station’s variety of programs and content. Musically, local and independent bands get exposure that they otherwise wouldn’t and CJAM’s spoken word programming provides differing points of view to issues amongst the Windsor/Detroit communities that would not get coverage if it were not for campus/community radio stations like CJAM. Weekly, DJs and volunteers put in their time to provide programs and content that is unique, different and provides the listener with something different from what you might find in the mainstream media. On many occasions, artists have been discovered through CJAM first and their DJs, volunteers and staff dig deep to provide valuable content. In a world that has streaming and the Internet at your fingertips, CJAM FM (which was one of the first stations to offer a live stream of its radio feed in 1996 and still does so online) continues to provide content that is relevant regardless of musical genre or background.

If you have ever tuned into the station, whether online or on 99.1 FM in the Windsor/Detroit area and have heard something that interested you or lead you to discovering something new, that is a great reason to show your support to CJAM FM. If you would like to support the station and help CJAM continue to grow, there are many options available and a variety of incentives available as a thank you for your support. This can be done by calling 519-971-3630 (in Windsor) or 1-855-344-2526 (in Detroit/out of town) or by donating online at www.cjam.ca or at https://grouprev.com/cjam-revolution-rock

CJAM FM 2014 Pledge Drive & Show # 532

This week marks CJAM FM’s annual pledge drive. It is the one time a year that this non-profit campus/community radio station asks for donations in order to keep providing quality programming for the Windsor/Detroit area and anyone that is streaming it online. Since CJAM is non-profit based, we are limited in our capacity to raise money through advertising and rely heavily on listener-supported dollars. The annual funding or “pledge drive” is to help pay for everyday items, equipment and general operations that take place at the station. CJAM has been operating at 500 watts for over 25 years and recently the station increased its signal 2,084 watts.

CJAM has come a long way since they first began as a carrier current station in 1974. Initially the station was only heard on the University of Windsor campus and close-surrounding areas with its 20 watts of power located at 660 AM. In 1977, CJAM was established, previously it had been known as CSRW (Canada Student Radio Windsor). With the name in place CJAM broadcasted on the AM radio band until November of 1983, where it was established as an FM station located at 9.15 FM in the Windsor/Detroit area. CJAM’s first power increase occurred in 1996, where it grew in strength from 50 watts to 500 watts allowing the station to be heard on a greater scale in Windsor and Detroit surrounding areas. In 2009, CJAM FM switched radio frequencies to 99.1 FM, establishing themselves as a campus/community station with “protected status” from the CRTC.

In terms of programming, CJAM provides a wide variety of programming that is just not heard on mainstream radio. In addition to the music programs, which cover everything from jazz to punk and beyond, there are also spoken word programs and ethno-cultural programs that provide views from all perspectives in different languages. Without a station like CJAM, many different community groups, artists and musicians would not be heard and would get lost in the mainstream shuffle of media coverage. Although the Internet has greatly improved awareness of underground artists, bands and differing points of view, whether political or otherwise, there is still a disconnect that is similar to the maligning mainstream media. Despite all of this, CJAM continues to thrive and grow with the content it covers. The station’s mandate still stands, which is to provide the community with information and music programming ignored by the mainstream media in the Windsor/Detroit area. CJAM provides you with real music by real people who are volunteer based programmers who love and want to share the music and content with the listeners and community.

CJAM is now at 2,084 watts and broadcasts in a greater radius because of the support it has received from the Windsor/Detroit communities. This year’s pledge drive is no different, CJAM is asking for your continued support. To assist CJAM reach their $30,000 dollar goal and to help CJAM to continue to grow, you can donate and show your support today. CJAM offers a wide variety of incentives as a thank you for your donation, which can be viewed on their website. This can be done by calling 519-971-3630 (in Windsor) or 1-855-DIG-CJAM (1-855-344-2526 in Detroit and out of town) or by donating securely via PayPal on cjam’s website at www.cjam.ca.

CJAM FM Pledge Drive 2013 & Show # 481

CJAM FM first began on the FM dial in November of 1983. The station began its FM status on 91.5 FM on the radio dial in the Windsor/Detroit area and after being on that frequency for over 25 years went through the process of a signal change. In the process they secured a protected signal status and began anew on 99.1 FM on the FM dial in the Windsor/Detroit area. Prior to that CJAM was an AM station and existed in a limited range of frequency around the University of Windsor campus. Campus/Community radio when it started in the late 80’s provided a voice for all things underground and alternative to the mainstream, it created a network of artists and connections for bands and artists alike. Bands such as Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet, Deja Voodoo, The Gruesomes, Thrush Hermit, Eric’s Trip and countless other Canadian independent artists would not have had a voice if it were not for Campus/Community radio. CJAM was and still is one of those stations that offer a different point of view and an alternative to the oversaturated and monotonous mainstream media, not just in the realm of music in differing genres, but also in the spoken word and ethno-cultural categories. And while in today’s age, even though we have the advent and convenience of the internet, there is still an oversaturation of sorts to a degree. A station like CJAM proves that Campus/Community radio is still relevant regardless of whether it is 2013 or 1983. It still provides that underground network and alternative point of view that just cannot be replicated elsewhere and it urges you to think differently.

This year CJAM is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a non-profit Campus/Community radio station in the Windsor/Detroit area. Being non-profit means the station relies on donations from its yearly pledge drive to keep thriving and growing. CJAM is working towards its goal of increasing its signal strength to reach a wider audience and that in addition to the usual budgetary expenses such as equipment, etc. are great reasons to support this station. For this year’s pledge drive CJAM has a goal of raising $30,000, thirty for thirty. On my program today a healthy amount of pledges were raised and donated, but CJAM FM still needs your support. By donating to CJAM there are many incentives to offer as a thank you, including this year’s t-shirt. You can view a list of incentives here. You can still donate online by visiting www.cjam.ca and clicking the “donate” button, which is done securely through PayPal. If you are in the Windsor area you can also call 519-971-3630 or if you are in the Detroit and out of town area you can call 1-855-344-2526 to pledge.
