Revolution Rock: The Golden Episode

On August 12th, the 1000th episode of Revolution Rock aired on CJAM FM’s airwaves. To celebrate this we did an episode with a gold theme. We have done several theme episodes in the past (not just during our annual February theme month episodes), but I don’t believe we’ve ever done a theme like this before. Inspired by a shuffle playlist last year where songs with the word “gold” in it kept popping up, we decided to go with this theme for the 1000th episode. Every song that was in this episode featured the word “gold.” I suppose it can be called our golden episode.

The Gories - Idol with the Golden Head

Written by Leiber/Stoller, “Idol with the Golden Head” was originally released as a single in 1957 by The Coasters. Recorded at Sheldon Recording Studio in Chicago of the at the time new Chess Records building at 2120 Michigan Ave. This late 50s soul track was covered by Detroit’s The Gories in 1992. Giving it a garage/soul spin featuring Peg O’Neil’s primal stomp combined with the dual guitar attack from Mick Collins and Danny Kroha, along with Collin’s great vocal and Kroha’s backing vox, this track is found in two places in The Gories discography, on 1992’s Baby Say Uhh! single (as the B-side) and on their 1992 studio album Outta Here labeled as “Great Big Idol with the Golden Head.” The song itself is a lesser known song it seems in The Coasters discography. It tells the tale of someone buying an artifact, in this case an idol with a golden head and asks it where their love interest big foot May is. It turns out she’s at Catfish Creek partying, but this track captures a sense of youthful spirit, romance and adventure.

This now legendary Detroit garage band, The Gories released three full-length albums Houserockin’ (in 1989), I Know You Fine But How You Doin’ (1990), Outta Here (1992) and was featured on compilations in addition to releasing numerous singles. In 2013, a live recording from 1988 titled The Shaw Tapes: Live in Detroit 5/27/1988 was released through Third Man Records. The live album, like their music is raw and uninhibited sounding, it was recorded by Jim Shaw at a converted storefront that no longer exists. The set was captured in the spring of 1988 prior to the release of their first full-length album Houserockin’. The set features tracks that would wind up on this album including several that wouldn’t such as a cover of The Stooges “Real Cool Time,” The Iguanas “Again & Again,” The Keggs “To Find Out,” the surf track “Nautiloid Reef,” and several others. In 2015, they released their first new recording in 30 years, the single Be Nice/On the Run through Third Man Records. The Gories since reforming in 2009 have been performing live off and on while Collins, Kroha and O’Neil have performed in a variety of other bands since The Gories initial split. O’Neil played with ’68 Comeback and The Darkest Hours, Collins currently performs with The Dirtbombs, Wolfmanhattan Project, Danny Kroha performs solo and as Danny & The Stools.

The Fire Engines – Big Gold Dream

Forming in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1979, the Fire Engines were a post punk band and part of the Scottish post punk scene at the time. In their brief career, they released one mini album (Lubricate Your Living Room) and three singles (Get Up and Use Me, Candyskin, Big Gold Dream) before disbanding in 1981. Known for their funky, yet discordant, anti-pop rhythms, “Big Gold Dream” followed their Candyskin/Meat Whiplash single, which when originally released in 1981 went to #7 on the UK Indie Charts. Previously their debut single Get Up and Use Me/Everythings Roses went to #9 on the UK Indie Charts. With “Big Gold Dream” the song with its catchy choruses, funky rhythms and female back up vocals seemed pegged to be another single charting song in the UK, but unfortunately it did not chart. The band imploded shortly after this and just before a potential US tour. The band’s history is also connected with Bob Last, who had the label Fast Product/Pop:Aural. He would release at the time new post punk music from not only The Fire Engines, but also Gang of Four, Mekons and The Human League to name a few. He would also be a manager for The Human League.

Two of the members of the band (Davy Henderson and Russell Burn) would go on to form the band Win, Henderson formed the noise rock oriented band Nectarine No.9 in the early 90s. More recently he has performed/recorded with The Sexual Objects. In 2004, The Fire Engines reformed to support The Magic Band in Edinburgh, although not with Captain Beefheart, the band had been a huge influence on Fire Engines. With that a new interest in the band grew. A limited edition single followed next with Franz Ferdinand. The Fire Engines covered their song “Jaqueline” and Franz Ferdinand covered “Get Up and Use Me.” Several compilations were released as well. Most recently, Codex Teenage Premonition in 2005, made up of live recordings and live sessions and Hungry Beat in 2007, which collected the band’s mini album Lubricate Your Living Room along with the three singles they’ve released.

As February arrives, Revolution Rock is prepping for its annual theme month programming. Every episode that airs in February will be devoted to a specific theme. Dave and Adam have some cool programming lined up ranging from our annual Black History Month program to our Revolution Surf episode. Revolution Rock can be streamed and downloaded from cjam.ca (and also after it airs on this website). Last year Revolution Rock became a syndicated program and can now be heard on twelve other campus/community radio stations across Canada in addition to CJAM FM.

Stones in Exile: The 50th Anniversary of The Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street Album

Originally released in May of 1972, Exile On Main Street is a double album released by The Rolling Stones. The recording of the album began in 1969 and continued into 1971 in the South of France in a villa rented by Keith Richard named Nellcote. At the time the band was living abroad as tax exiles, the basement rooms of the villa became the studio where the band would record the album. Recordings stretched across many days and nights as the band worked with a mobile recording unit. The sessions were described as disorganized and loose. At the time there were many other factors at play during the recordings including drug use, the conditions of the studio, growing disparity between the band members and their personal lives, hangers on and people coming by during the sessions. However as a result, Exile On Main Street was pieced together from these sessions in a double that many feel is The Rolling Stones at their best and most creative. Overdubs were done at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Musically the album dove into blues, country, gospel and rock and roll music in a variety of styles. Although it was met with some mixed reviews at the time of its release, it is now seen as one of their best. In 2010, a 40th anniversary edition of the album was released which featured a bonus disc made up of outtakes and alternate versions of songs recorded for the album. On this episode we will play the album in its entirety, but with a twist. We will be playing the full album, but made up of different versions of the songs from the sessions and live recordings. The show will also feature a selection of outtakes recorded from the session.

Houserockin’: Revolution Rock Celebrates Black History Month

In the mid 1980’s Mick Collins helped form the seminal and now legendary garage punk band The Gories in Detroit, Michigan. The band, who still plays live to this day features Mick Collins on vocals/guitar, Dan Kroha on guitar/vocals and Peg O’Neil on drums. After three albums and a series of singles the band broke up after a European tour in 1992. Collins also formed The Dirtbombs in 1992. The band started as a side project and started recording in 1995. They went on to go much further than that blended diverse influences such as punk, soul also featuring dual bass guitar and a dual drum and guitar lineup. The band has had an ever-changing lineup. Every album the band releases is different, but not in the traditional sense. For example 2011’s Party Store features rock covers of early Detroit techno and house music, 2001’s Ultraglide in Black is a collection of soul, R&B and Motown covers, 2013’s Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-blooey! is a bubble gum record. Mick has also been involved in many other bands such as Blacktop, King Sound Quartet and more recently Wolfmanhattan Project. On this episode of Revolution Rock, we will have sets of music featuring music with Mick Collins, as well as sets of music from other artists and genres such as Nina Simone, Howlin' Wolf and Salome Bey in celebration of Black History Month.

Still YC: A Special On You’ve Change Records

 You’ve Changed Records is an independent, artist run record label. Founded in 2009 by Daniel Romano and Steven Lambke, the label celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019. The first official released on You’ve Changed Records was Shotgun Jimmie’s Still Jimmie in 2009. The label has released music by Shotgun Jimmie, The Weather Station, Marine Dreams, Partner, Nap Eyes, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Fiver, Jon McKiel, Status/Non-Status, Julie Doiron, music from Steven Lambke and Daniel Romano and other bands that he has been a part of or collaborated with such as Daniel Romano’s Outfit, Ancient Shapes, Baby Eagle, Julie Doiron. Each release that You’ve Changed releases has its own unique art/album covers and design. Romano started out playing in indie folk acts Attack In Black and Daniel, Fred & Julie. Steven Lambke is known as being a member of the band Constantines. He has also been the creative director of Sappyfest since 2017 and has released music as Baby Eagle and as a solo artist. In 2020, Daniel Romano released numerous albums at an amazing rate. Nine albums, an EP and a 22-minute track with Tool’s Danny Carey were released by Romano in 2020. A major feat for any artist and all of them are great. On this episode we will feature selections from the You’ve Change Records discography.

Revolution Surf 2022

Every year theme month ends with our annual surf rock special titled Revolution Surf. Early surf music’s sound was dominated by the use of reverb units that were developed by Fender guitars in 1961. In the future they would be built into the amplifier, but at this point in the early 60s, they were separate units utilizing springs that helped to create that reverby sound that emulates what waves sound like. Now you can just add it as a setting when using a computer or on a guitar pedal or amplifier. For this year’s episode there will be no theme. The episode will be made up of a mixture of new and old surf and instrumental music from the past and present. Whether it was made with an old-fashioned reverb unit or one of the more modern reverb methods, Revolution Surf will end out this year’s theme month once again with a mix of surf sounds.

Revolution Rock (Revisited) Detroit Garage Rock & Show # 505

This week’s episode was a repeat of a program that first aired in February 2014. The program focused entirely on music from Detroit featuring primarily Garage Rock, but also other genres from Detroit and the surrounding areas. My original post was on The Hentchmen’s Hentch Forth-Five.

The Gories – You Little Nothing

This now legendary Detroit Garage Rock band featuring Mick Collins (who would later go on to play in The Dirtbombs and numerous other groups) had one of their first recordings featured on the 1987 Detroit compilation album It Came From The Garage Volume II. “You Little Nothing” was one of the first Gories recording to be released. "Give Me Love" another Gories song was also featured on this compilation. "You Little Nothing" would be re-issued with two other recordings on the Bug House Waterbug And Roach Traps EP in 1995 via Get Hip Recordings. There were only ever two It Came From The Garage compilation albums, Volume 1 was released in 1986 and Volume 2, as previously mentioned in 1987. Each of these compilations along with featuring a variety of Detroit bands such as Zombie Surfers and 3D Invisibles, also featured the Windsor bands Prehistoric Cave Strokers and Lost Patrol.
